Unhappy Rear Diff issue

I do not get on here much as I no longer have time to work on my own junk.

But here is my issue on our 2wd 2001 1500

8.5 W/ 3.42 open diff on one of the side bearings floats around in the carrier housing hole when it is installed with the correct thrust washer. But, if you remove the thrust washer it fits nice and snug just like the opposite side that has a thrust washer on it.

I do not believe these to be variable thickness type shims but plain thrust washers to keep the back of the gear from spinning on the carrier housing. I searched and could not find any other ones in different thickness.

Anyone have any idea on what the issue might be?

Thanks.

Re: Rear Diff issue

shoulder of gear has a radius while the housing doesn't. It's like fitting a circle in a square hole

So, its supposed to be like that? The gear teeth has identical wear to the other side that is has no play in it.

Thanks for your response

Re: Rear Diff issue

wait a minute. You have a side gear that is tight and won't move when the thrust washer is in place? I may be misunderstanding your original question.

Move as in move around in the carrier hole not as in rotate. I got a diff shop on the phone today and explained to them and they said bad carrier as the side gear has managed to slop around and make the carrier hole bigger.

Issue solved, need new carrier..

Thanks
