Speedo gear help

Hello all, When I replaced my gauges, my speedometer still didn't work. I have a TH350 trans, so I ordered a new speedo gear and bullet. I put those in yesterday, and still no joy. So, my guess is the gear on the tail shaft must be the culprit. I can't think of anything else it could be. Is that just a matter of dropping the driveshaft and removing the rear housing from the trans? Thanks!

Pull the bullett and look inside and see if there is a gear on the trans shaft. is the cable hooked up and not broke in line somewhere ? You should be able to spin the end of cable at the trans end and have someone look at speedo give it a quick spin see if the speedo moves. I have even mocked up to use my drill to spin it.

I didn't think to look in the hole when I put the bullet in, I'll do that. It's a new digital gauge with a sending unit that screws into the trans. It spins and works, so I'm thinking the gear is all that's left. Thanks.

So, I pulled the bullet out and stuck my finger in the hole. I briefly felt a gear before it slid up the shaft. I'm guessing that's not supposed to happen... do I need to worry about driving it with it loose in there?

The speedo gear inside the transmission shouldn't slide. The speedo gear should have a clip in it to keep it from moving on the shaft. I would take the tail shaft housing off and see if the clip broke and replace the clip.

Here's a pic of what I'm talking about.

Re: Speedo gear help

Super helpful. Thanks!! I'm going to drop the driveshaft and pull the cover tomorrow. It's definitely sliding around in there.

Re: Speedo gear help

Yep. I pulled the cover off, and the spring clip that holds the gear in place was just laying in the bottom and the gear had worked it's way up the shaft. Simply snapped the clip back into place and slid the gear over it. Problem solved. Thanks!
