newbie advice

I want to buy a truck for my son and I to work on. I found a 72 cheyenne long bed 400 big block with air. It has some rust but has been in Arizona for the last 20 years. It has extensive records from 1982 (2nd owner) and had the engine recently rebuilt. The woman selling it (husband died) is asking $4000. It runs well and everything seems to work. Has some minor dings. Does anybody thing this is a fair price...bad price? Thanks.

If you are in Arizona, I think you can find one with NO rust for cheaper. Where is the rust and how bad?

I need to go back and check the firewall and rear of cab, but all I saw was bottom of the door and door frame. I guess I thought big block and ps, pb, auto, air justified the price, but I have not been looking long. Thanks.

Not a "bad" deal, but not really a bargain either. I'd offer $3000.

It's not that bad, I've seen people ask more for less but I would offer $3000 and end up somewhere in the middle as long as the rust isn't too bad.

it may or may not be true, but what ive heard is a warehouse were all the 396 blocks were that year got flooded and the blocks stayed underwater for a while so they rusted or something and needed to be bored out, so they got bored out 30 and made into a 402, and marketed as a 400

these are both stories that are out there.... Only GOD knows the truth now....... anyway does the pickup have a tach, tilt, sliding rear windows??? look at the option sheet and see how many options it has... If you don't know it is in the glovebox. It is worth what ever you think it is worth but I would try dealing with him/her. good luck and ask questions.... the only stupid question is the one left unasked.
