Help With Temperture Switch!!!!

On a 307, where on the exhaust manifold does the temperture switch go to. There are outlets from the manifold to the front ram horn on the steering column side and on the manifold under back ram horn on the starter side. WHERE DOES THE SWITCH GO???? On my dads 305...it is on the column side....I think thats the switch...it looks like a little nail in a spark plug looking thingy. AANNDDDD..
1-What type of wire sould be used.....
2-how do you connect the wire to the switch????
3-what type of connector?????.
4-ALSO....where does the needle from the dash temp gauge need to be?? centered or reading cold??

I am completly confused on what your talking about here.
What are you trying to turn on/off with this switch?
From what you describe, your talking about an oxygen sensor, which the only reason you should have on in your truck, is if you are delivering it to someone who needs it for there computer controlled car.

I need to know how the temp gauge from the dash connects to the engine. You know, the gauge that tells you how hot the engine is running??? I need to know how to connect that to wherever it needs to be connected so the gauge will read....thats it....please tell me how and also, before I connect the gauge.....should the needle read cold or should it be in the center.....I hope this helps...sorry...

Ok, cool I got you now.
While most temp guages will be in all the way to the left (cold) i have seen a couple of these guages function properly when they hang up in the middle turned off. All the really matters, is that is goes to the cold when you turn it on and the motor is actually cold.
The wire you are looking for is a dark green wire, and it should go to the temp sending unit. Normally this will be inbetween the #1 and #3 exhaust port on the side of the head (inbetween the spark plugs) however, sometimes, for one reason or another, it may be on the intake manifold in the front center area.
I am not 100% sure about teh fitting, but I am thinking it is a female spade terminal...kinda like what you would find going to a speaker inside the speaker box.

years older than our truck has the sender unit for temp gauge in intake, it weas moved in mid 60s somewhere doiwn to driver head, forgot now what year it was, would have to look it up,.
the needle can stop and point wherever it wants to, it looses magnetic force action against or to it when key is shut off, it free floats in the gauge assembly if you ever disassembled gauges then yull know what i mean,. it can sit whereever it wants to with key off, if it pegs to hot side with key on then you got problems with the dk green wire to the sender unti in head grounded on metal soemwhere probably at firewall where it goes through or on the exh manifold.

Just for reference sake.My 71 SBC 350 has the temp gauge sender threaded into the drivers side head inbetween the #1+3 cylinder.
It runs off a dark green wire.The connecting point on the temp gauge senders are what looks like a brass post with a flat ring attached to it.A female spade terminal slides over that connection on the sender(Hope that makes sense).

As far as where it sits when ign off,mine usually sits where it was when it was on and goes to the cold side when ign. is turned back on if sitting long enough.

Just to add to the other replies, the outlet on the passenger side head is for the TCS (Transmission Controlled Spark) system used for emissions control from 1970 (I think) on.

Is your dad's 305 a later model, computer controlled vehicle? Are you sure you don't have the oxygen sensor on your dad's 305 confused for the temp sending unit? The temp sending unit is mounted in a water jacket somewhere (in the head or the intake manifold). The oxygen sensor looks like a "spark plug" and is mounted in the exhaust system in or just behind the exhaust manifold on later model, computer controlled vehicles.

His 305 he had over hauled and put into his 78 pick up sometime in the early 80's to replace his busted 350.....the 305 valve covers look exactly like mine, they have these little peices on them that look like supports. I think it was a pre 307 engine, maybe a 305 from a 67 pick up or from a camaro. I'm not sure how old it is....but I do know what little plug you are talking about, therefore I am safe to assume that the temp switch has to have a spade connector. correct?

After I have figure out this mess, is it ok to move the needle from the temp switch to cold, or should I leave it just to see what it does????

if you're talking about moving the guage needle by hand, on a cold motor it should move to cold by itself when you turn the key on... if it doesn't then you still got problems... here's a pic of the plug for the temp sender...
