Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3

I started filling the holes in my donor frame. I made these little buttons so I could TIG it for the most part without filler rod. It significantly reduced my tip dipping. I also don't like the idea of just piling MIG wire in there. I don't like grinding. Probably not how it's supposed to be done but it made it easy peasy. They took me about a minute to a minute and a half to make each. The bigger ones take longer because of the parting. There is going to be a lot of work done on these and I wanted uniformity in the steel. Thank you for your time.

i got my turn signals working again. turns out that part was just me being an idiot. replaced the brake switch and didnt help. i followed ididits testing directions. im not getting power tot he "power" wire for the brakes. next step is to pull the fuse paneloff the firewall and make sure it hasnt come loose from the back. annoying.

That's a tough act to follow. It finally quit raining here and it's back in the 90's but at least it's humid. I finished filling the 123 holes in my first frame donor rail, 123 to go. I still have 2 or 3 hours of grinding and sanding to do on this one but it's close.

Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3

Well the corners are rusted but still not bad at all. Trying to find a decent quote here in Northern Cali to blast and epoxy the cab then I can attempt to do the corners. Little patience and time right?

Here are the pics of the corners.
I know blasting and epoxy will preserve it so I won’t have to worry about it 15 years from now. Just need to find a good shop. Anybody in Northern Cali know of a dependable shop?

Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3

I have nearly 1000 miles on my truck now (took two years) so time for its first oil change. I won't be changing the oil every thousand miles, just the first time to purge all the shop dust and build residue from the motor. Probably will change it every 5000 miles henceforth. Nonetheless I was surprised how dirty and black the oil was.

Really over the past week, installed a T5 in my ‘59. It all went smoothly, bolted up easily, needed the driveshaft shortened, a great improvement though, a lot more fun to drive.

Nice job! I'd like to do this to my truck, but being 6'-3", and not having much room now, I wonder if it would be a good idea for me or not. How about some pictures of you clutch pedal/master cylinder setup now

My setup is stock, as far as clutch and brake pedals go, master cylinder under the floor as original. I’m 5’-10”, a 32” inseam. These pics are with the seat all the way back, seat against the gas tank. As far as the trans itself, I’m really happy with how it works. I have a more detailed post over on Stovebolt, FWIW.

What I did with Blue Cloud.......... been running like a champ.
Been collecting certain rocks, for my yard. This load would be 5 walks through a nearby field. I could use a positrac rear end.

One good thing about getting really old is you shrink and cab gets bigger all the time

Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3

Got my truck back from the local hotrod shop. Had new leaf springs installed (lowered 3") and improved the ride immensely. Plus, the main work done we changed out the fan (electric, and no shroud) system with new fan (with control module) and shroud. Changes to cooling were amazing. To give you an idea of the changes we'll use the following. Outside temp in the high 90's (97 degrees this Saturday).

Old system would run 195 degrees at 70mph, then in traffic would climb to 205-210 degrees (making me very nervous). With the AC running (which we would have to turn off, making my wife uncomfortable).

New setup, with the same outside temp, now runs at 185 degrees at 70mph, then in traffic drops to 170 degrees all with the AC running. AC actually is colder as well. New fan blows like a hurricane pulling so much more air through the radiator.
