Window glass

I'm looking at window glass for the 48. I want to go with straight glass, eliminating the frame.

So, anyone who has done this, would you share where you got it, and what they needed to cut it?

I just compared the two frames that I have, and they have slightly different bends that would result in different shapes of the glass. So, if there is a company who has already cut them and they worked in your truck, I'd like to get in touch with them and see if they could do 2 more and ship them.

Any other information would be appreciated.

I did flat glass on my last (2) builds. On the first one, I got really fancy and had them polish the edges. I simply removed the metal trim and had them make me some new glass to that dimension/shape. You could also make a window out of plywood and trace the window shape you like the fit best with and have them make a piece out of glass.

Re: Window glass

The plywood is a good idea, but when I "peeled" the metal trim off the old windows, it bent a little.

Now, at the top, when the bottoms are set flat with the two ends even, the tops are about 1/4" off. Which means one is bent about a 1/4" or both are bent about 1/8" each. The rear top corners don't line up and the front top bends don't line up.

With the plywood, I could make one of each and then see which one fits the best and work toward a solution.

Yeah, I didn't even use the metal trim I removed. I used the glass itself (no trim) for the templates.

Re: Window glass

My glass was so broken up as I pulled the metal off of it, it started coming apart. In my usual OCD way, I cleaned it up and disposed of the broken shards.

After I get some more wiring done, as a break in that, I'll get back on this window thing.

Thank you for the help.

Re: Window glass

The glass has to be the size and maybe a fraction larger than that depending on the thickness of the channel. You do have to buy a special width of channel for the rimless glass.

I'd highly recommend going to the trouble and expense of having tempered glass made as laminated glass stands a serious chance of cracking the first time someone slams the door without the frame around it .

Re: Window glass

Thanks, Mr48.

I will ask about tempered glass. I didn't know the difference, but if they can't do tempered, I'll just go back with a stock window.

I did get the different window channel so that if would fit. I will check to see if it fits the tempered glass, if they can do it.

Re: Window glass

The shop that used to take care pf it for locally closed when the owner retired. They would cut the glass to fit and send it to a shop that tempered the glass and sent it back. I'm pretty sure that shop is in Vancouver wa..they are a full service custom glass shop and I may trailer my truck to them when the time comes.

Re: Window glass

precision is the channel you want, its tight as hell until you break it in.

you bent BOTH sides of metal trim? they are mirrors of each other, so one side can be a template for both sides.

I would personally get glass at least 1/2" taller than the originals, sometimes the regulators dont roll up all the way and taller glass would solve that.

the local glass shop only sells tempered glass for side windows, they only do laminated on windshields.

Re: Window glass

Thanks Joe. I may be in touch if your local glass ship can't do what I want.

I got lucky and found 2 original glasses locally. They are broken up a bit, but still together enough to put in the frame, once I scraped off that old tape stuff. I think they will be good enough for a template.

Now to make sure I get the right glass cut and see how it fits.
