I am wanting to know if a two or 4 post lift is preferred by you guys that use them.

2 post clear floor lift is ideal. The lift is not in the way for any repairs. Most 4 post are drive on which makes it a pain to pull wheels or do suspension work.

2-post in my opinion is best. It allows you to easily remove the cab, bed, or other body parts from any truck. On full frame cars, you can remove the whole body from the frames. With a four post, this would be much harder. The only draw back is that they are not mobile.

Something that is going have 4000 pounds hanging over your head isnt a good item to price shop. You will be much better off finding a used forward or mohawk etc. I see them listed all the time for about 1000 bucks used. Its a pretty easy install so long as your floor is thick enough. If you have the ceiling height get a clear floor lift. That floor plate always manages to be in the way especially when doing transmission work.

we have a staggering 8 lifts in our shop. 4 2-post, and 4 4-post. Being that we do a lot of chassis and brake work, and not too many oil changes, the 2-post lifts are the shop favorites. We use 'Bend Pack' lifts, I have two that are 20 yrs old, and no problems.

looking for a lift myself, searched thread and found your question. I was considering a 2 post myself, and after reading responses to you, convinced me that is the way to go. Have you got yours yet? And if so, what did you get and how do you like it? Thanks

Depends what you're doing. If you're looking to just store a car I'd go with the 4 post. For any work I would absolutely go 2 post. I've worked with both and the 4 post is a real pain, even for an oil change you're constantly ducking under the ramps. I've used my 2 post to lift all sorts of stuff out of the back of my truck including a 6.4L diesel, lift the cabs and boxes off trucks, put plywood across the arms to make a nice size work table, etc... pretty versatile.
Research the brands though. Mohawks are nice but the fact that you have to release the locks at both columns would be enough to sway me away. Bend Pak, Rotary... Personally, I wouldn't buy a lift unless it's ALI/ETL certified. They are tested to three times their rating.
