Another CL story

I went to go get a Mule. Not the kind with 4 legs. A Kawasaki Mule to use on my property.

The seller won't give me his number or address, just email. He want's to meet at a gas station. Fine... I get that. He doesn't know me. We arrange to meet at noon.

So...I'm sitting in the gas station, it's 12:15 I've been there for 20 minutes. Nobody's there with a Mule. My wife is hungry and she's getting cranky. I finally say screw this let's go to lunch.

We sit down at a Mexican restaurant that I like and my phone rings. It's the guy. I have no idea how he got my number. I've never called him.

I said we were waiting and he says "Were you in a gray Jeep?
I say yes.
He says well I was sitting right next to you in the blue Expedition.
There was a guy in a blue Expedition sitting next to me. But he never said anything.

So I tell him we just sat down for lunch and I'll call him when we're done. He's fine with that. Okay...We're good, just some miscommunication.

We finish lunch and I call him... It's sold.

What a fiasco. But I don't mind because it was getting weird and I had a nice afternoon with my girl.

I have worse CL stories like the guy that cussed me out for calling his car a POS. Hey I'm sorry. But it was a POS and I drove a hour to go see it. that guy.

Re: Another CL story

I drove 2 1/2 hours to look at / buy a 1969 Ford Galaxie 500 Sport Roof that was posted on CL. Naturally it wasn't quite as clean as indicated. It shimmied at 60 MPH. The suspension showing its age and just didn't sit right. I don't remember what it was but there was something under the hood that need attention.

After the test drive I just flatly, but nicely, told him that I wasn't going to insult either one of us by making an offer on the car. He got a little testy and I told him I didn't drive 2 1/2 hours to kick tires.

He quickly settled and asked me what he should do to make the car more sellable for the price he was asking. I told him to fix the things we discussed and present it as something he would buy.

When I took my first shot at selling my '78 Trans Am I listed it on CL...it was a lot more trouble than it was worth.

I do scroll DFW CL for classic cars / truck damned near daily. Mainly just to see what's out there and how private sellers are pricing their vehicles.

Some people don't know how to sell something. He didn't bring the Mule or describe what he would be driving. I bet he's saying you were a flake. I bet you are saying he's a dipchit

I can't really blame him for being skittish. You never know? But I do think he was a little over the top with insecurity. I was local and there aren't that many people here.

I am the other way. I don't even lock my doors. I don't sweat it. Life is easier that way.

The biggest problem I had was when I sold a car on CL and the guy drank a lot of my beer, He was a big boy and he could really put em away,

But he paid me... All good.

No. But I made enough money to not worry about it.

If you leave $10K on my table then you can have all the beer you want.

I have a table saw for sale on Cl. It will be sitting outside the garage with the door down when the buyer comes to get it. It's MY beer, dadgummit!

I have been seeing Marketplace classic vehicle ads pop up with no description and only one picture. Always for a ridiculously low price. I just keep scrolling. Figure its a big scam in the making.

Re: Another CL story

Craigslist Flakes are real, just communicated with one about a month ago.
Saw two 55-gallon plastic drums $5 ea. about 5 mi. from me, I had been keeping my eye open for a couple to put shovels, rakes, etc in up at my garden area.

So, I call the number and get a voicemail, left my name, number and what I was calling about. I immediately get a text back from the same number, "Did you just call me"? I texted back "Yes, when and where can I pick up the drums if still available"? The Flake texted back "Can you come now"? Now I know something is not right, so I call the number again and get voicemail again, so I just hung up and immediately got a text, "Did you just call me"?
Now I text back...You f....'n flake you got all day to text but no time to take an actual phone call like a "NORMAL" person, take you f...'n barrels turn em sideways and shove em up your A**....never heard from the flake again.

That's why I didn't blame this guy for being suspicious of me. Who am I ? Nobody. At least nobody he knows. But to give me absolutely no information is a little too much. I had to sit in a gas station parking lot with my wife complaining. That's too much.

Re: Another CL story

In my world there is no such thing as a Craigslist flake. There are flakes everywhere. not just selling venues.

On FB Marketplace I had a set of new take off 88-98 styled steel wheels for sale. Five pictures, all four together and each one alone.

I fully described them, 5 on 5 GM truck pattern, 15 x 7, use center caps held on by lug nuts, Center caps not included, just the wheels shown, etc. I had many people inquiring. A lot of action but no one with a vehicle the lug pattern worked for or they thought they could mount dog dish hubcaps. It seemed no one read the full description before inquiring. Or they have serious comprehension skills. One guy had a Chevy truck but he thought trim rings and center caps were included. I'm pretty happy how that went. I realized I really wanted to hang onto these

You can advertise in the Sunday paper, or any classified ad anywhere or sell at swap meets or from a store. You will run into flakes

This just happened yesterday. I have some wire fencing for sale on Facebook Marketplace
3 people responded wanting to know if it was still available. 3rd guy say I’ll take it and came and got it, All good. Then 1st guy who only asked if it was available wants to know why I didn’t wait for his reply and accused me of selling out from under him.

Re: Another CL story

Years ago, I had a 72 Cheyenne Super advertised in Hemmings.

A guy called and asked all the right questions and then I didn't hear from him for three months.

Then he called me about 9 PM one Friday and asked if I still had the truck. I did, and he said he was going to put brakes on a guys truck and that guy would bring him down from St Louis and he would meet me at 8 AM the next morning at the Chevy dealer.

I thought, yeah right. At 8 AM he pulled into the parking lot. He was in an old Chevy truck with another guy and a young girl. He was in biker dress and the other guy looked like he had just finished a brake job. The 15 year old girl was barefoot, with a crop top and Daisy Duke shorts.

He looked my truck over thoroughly and bought it. Now, this was a pretty high dollar truck and he wanted to go somewhere private to pay me. His buddy kept trying to stay close but we found an office with a locking door. The buyer pulled off his biker boots and he had greenbacks strapped all up and down his legs.

After the deal, we walked outside and he headed for the truck. I said "I wonder where your friend went?" He said, "He's not my friend.", got in the Cheyenne Super and headed for St. Louis.

Re: Another CL story

I'd say that was a colorful experience right there!

I sold a truck I didn't even have listed. It was a '72 K/10 Custom Deluxe. I get home from work and my wife says the guy running the milk truck to the dairy farm up the road stopped by and wants to know if I want to sell the K/10. She hands me a scrap of paper with "Call Gary Sunday" and a phone number. I figured he ran the truck 6 days a week and it was up really early and in bed early. It was early in the week and I waited till Sunday to call. The first thing he said was "I didn't think you were going to call after the week went by and I hadn't heard from you". I told him the note said wait till Sunday and that's what I did. "Sunday is my last name". I guess I was the flake in that deal. I sold him the truck

My wife was selling all kinds of stuff during the peak of the pandemic on FbMarketplace. I was the delivery person and or bodyguard for the transactions. She sold everything from pillows to dumbells (no not me). I must say, we met some of the nicest people. It made me think maybe there is a chance for humanity.

^ You're 6 foot six and an axe handle wide at the shoulders, right? Behooves people to be nice, when you're big. I'm selling a table saw and when people come to look at it, I have my 33 year old son there to "help load it up". He's a lot bigger than me.

That has been my experience as well. I have buyers come by and not leave for a couple hours, after enjoying some good conversation. I learn about people throwing perfectly good items away, when moving or whatever, because they don't want to deal with the hassle of selling. It's never been a hassle for me. And even if I didn't want to deal with selling I'd at least give it away, either drop by a donation center or set it out by the road with a "FREE" sign. I have never come home to see an item still there that I left out that morning

craigslist ive noticed is so full of scams now that i dont even post on there anymore, so many different attempts to hack into your cell phone.
fb marketplace is even worse.. the second they say cash app or paypal friends and family i block them.
Ill only deal within NM now due to so many scams on fb
especially for buddy buckets and short fleet beds
