Snake catching?

I went to roll the trash bins back from the road and there is a roughly three foot long black or maybe indigo blue snake. Absolutely the fastest snake I have ever encountered. It zips around the corner of the house and slips through a hole in the bricks under the house.

The lady of the house saw it last summer when it was about a foot long and freaked out.
Any ideas as to how can I catch it and remove it?
I don't have a fear of snakes, just lots of respect.

Leave it be and let it take care of her rodents. Tell her to be looking for the snake when she goes out. It doesn't want to see her any more than she wants to see it

Re: Snake catching?

Sounds like a black racer..its probably in Alabama by now..
Other than scaring the lady of the house , they are harmless
But get rid of their food source , and they'll move on..

I'm all for this one. But if your wife is anything like mine, she won't go out of the house if there's a snake within a mile. I suppose you could use a glue trap, but that probably wouldn't be too good for the snake.

Re: Snake catching?

Yeah, before I got this old place tight we would get a big old blackie inside on occasion. I know what you mean, my wife got a bit unsettled over that. I tried telling her it would keep the rats, mice, and poisonous snake away. Didn't sink in too well

Yup. They'll keep the critters away. I had a big King Snake in my yard but he took off on me. Bummer.

I like snakes. Except rattlesnakes or the other nasty ones. But what do expect from a guy with a pet Tarantula.

I thought of getting a Boa or a Python. But I have a tiny Chihuahua. Probably not a good idea.

Re: Snake catching?

Did it look like this one? I had not seen a blue racer since I was a kid but saw one in the empty lot next to me about nine years ago. Guess I'm a snake nerd as I was excited to see it.

Also, took this photo of a king snake napping on the bricks behind my wood pile last spring. Was happy to see it as well.

Re: Snake catching?

Glue trap ordered. If I happen to catch it, he can be released with Vegetable oil which cuts the glue.

As far as what it looked like, I don't have a high speed camera mounted on a rocket sled to keep up with it.

Re: Snake catching?

Saw one go thru the back yard once head up like a King Cobra snapping head forward & back to move and it was fast, fast, fast ! It did not slither ? Never forget. Hate snakes but have learned to appreciate the good ones. We had a couple black snakes 4' & 5' long we always saw in the yard & slithering up tree trunks for a few years. No sightings this year.

Re: Snake catching?

More than 5 decades ago I had rented an old farmhouse in Kansas. It had a root cellar / tornado shelter in the yard. Being from the PNW, I had not seen any snakes bigger than a small garter snake.
And I wasn't aware of their rodent control benefits. [get to the point, Mike]

One day I opened the door to the root cellar and saw a huge black snake. I must have pumped half a box of .22s into that poor critter. Laid his carcass out on the grass and measured it at 5' 4".
Only later learned they will keep rattlers and copperheads away (both of which lived in the area) and wished I had let it live.

some type of ring neck coral something or other. Not much larger around than a fat pencil. Pretty chill snake, when you hold them they like to wrap around you fingers for warmth. The one she got was about 18-20'' long stretched out. Indigenous to the Sierra Nevadas

Around here they are called either ring or ring neck snakes. Tend to be fairly small. Have seen orange like that one and some red and yellow ones as well.

Yeah, I'm sure the little fella will love that.

It reminds me of when I bought my Siamese fighting fish. It was shipped from China in a box. I figured that it would be dead by the time it got here. But no. It was fine. It swam all the way here from China.

Now that fish is so spoiled. If it is possible to spoil a fish, then my wife can do it. She buys special water for it to swim in. And the fish seems to recognize her and swims up to her. It has a lot of personality for a fish. Who'd a thunk it?

Re: Snake catching?

My five year old daughter was thrilled to catch her first snake (garter) today. She was really bummed 45 minutes later when the bucket was empty.
