I'm happy to help, and it's an interesting project. I have a few trucks I'd like to extrapolate their build dates, so it will help me too.

Does this link help on the gmc plant question you mention?

Re: The build date project

This is really turning out, thanks for the effort. Still can't zero my 72 Fremont 146xxx down to a single month, but pretty close. Fremont was really pushing them out too, they may have approached 9K a month at the time.

Any chance 71/72 Chevy Fremont trucks were the most plentiful? The results so far seem to imply so, perhaps age just caught up to 67-70.

Without specific dates you can't tell how many were produced per month, but here's where my 72 C20 would fall for Fremont, as a guide.......146xxx would be Feb. or Mar.

135708 Jan.
153077 Mar. Increased by 17369
161544 April Increased by 8467
164046 April Increased by 2502
168790 May Increased by 4744

I'm thinking Flint trucks may have been most plentiful (at least in '72) based on several VINs found online that start with a "3" after the "F" in the vin....as in 200,000+ (the first one started at 100,000) serial numbers for '72 Chevy Flint trucks. Just haven't been able to correlate build dates with those VINs that I am seeing.

Re: The build date project

Personally I wonder if it’s more that the Fremont trucks were being mainly sent to dry climates being they were produced in the west, and are the ones that have better survived.

I’ll get on the additions this evening.

Also, the original thread has been closed.

Re: The build date project

It may be helpful to reference the source of the info when updating the first two threads. For example, noting if it came from a PM or which post # the info is pictured.

Here's one I found that may be slightly out of order with another data point (post #68).

The truck from post 68 is blurry, likely 4-28-72 as it is within 85 trucks of this one. Certainly within the possibility of being on the same day?
If so, these are the first two I remember confirmed from the same day.

Yes, I think it is possible they were from the same day, given the blurriness of the one photo.

Does anyone know how the "job sequence number" (see very top left of build sheets) impacted production?

The truck in post #68:
Serial Number: 2Z164046
Job Sequence Number: 03114

The truck in post #89
Serial Number: 2Z163961
Job Sequence Number: 03x09 (guessing 03009, or less likely 03809)

It is interesting that even though the serial numbers are 85 numbers apart, the job sequence numbers appear to be at least 105 off from each other.

I'm wondering if it is possible that a certain batch of serial numbers started on a given day and then received their production date when finished assembling. If there were multiple assembly lines, perhaps some lower serial numbers could actually have a slightly later assembly completion date. ...just thinking/guessing out loud.

Re: The build date project

These are from an old thread on the board. Most on that thread appear to already be captured within the first two posts here or have illegible pictures.

70 GMC; SZ68109; 3/70

70 chevy; 0Z142486; 2/70

70 chevy; 0S138xxx; 12/69

70 chevy; 0A158364; 7/70.....this one was already on the list but had incorrect date.

72 chevy; 2F355033; 3/72... Original decal and reproduction decal found at link above.

I added the others but this one does not follow correct sequencing for Chevrolet. Is it potentially a GMC?

Are you referring to the "3" after the "F"? That threw me off too. But I think Flint produced a lot of trucks. One of my trucks is also a CCExx2F3xxxxx VIN (but the date portion of the blue sticker is ripped off and I don't have a build sheet, so I haven't added it to the list)...But both the blue sticker and the SPID have matching VINs with the F3 sequence on my Chevy truck.

There were I think 603,347 Chevy trucks (Blazers, C10s, K20, suburban, etc) produced in 1972 (according to post #6 in this thread...I added up all the 1972 production numbers). It appears Flint produced close to half of those 600,000 Chevy trucks based on the serial number referenced. In other words, Flint produced the 255-thousandth Chevy truck in March of 1972, and production likely went into June or July.

Added today’s, I started adding post numbers to the entries. I will go thru and update the rest of the entries as I get time. I still need to add a pm list I’ve got, hopefully tomorrow.

Re: The build date project

Piecing together post #7 in this thread states that his 1970 Blazer s/n would be 0S138946 with build date of 12/69.

On a related note, both of the first two posts in this current thread mention that Blazers and Jimmy's don't follow the same truck sequence. I see that many (all?) 69 blazers started with a "B," but are there any more details regarding that sequence comment? I would think the last 6 s/n digits are chronological (per plant), regardless if Blazer, suburban, or truck. No?

I certainly do not doubt the veracity of the "F3", I just have not been able to find the pattern. Considering Flint producing 300,000 for 72 equals 25,000 per month. So going to the end of March should equal about 200,000 trucks. So going with those numbers, the highest VIN for March of 72 Flint should be F300000. Of course, these numbers are based upon averages, not faster and slower production at different times.

Looking at March numbers for the other plants, Flints numbers would have to be about 71% higher. But if Flint produced half of the entire 72 run, this percentage would make sense.

However, we do have a Flint jamb sticker 4/72 with a sequence of F163780. I have added the F355033 and will continue to try and reconcile this.

Another curiosity... Has anyone seen a 2F2 VIN? Did they jump from F1 to F3 for some reason?
