Radio Volume Control scratchy

hello

have a 1972 chevy c10, factory am/fm radio
everything works fine
but the volume control when you turn its very scratchy sounding or no sound till you reach a certain volume, unfortunately its a little too loud when this happens

any radio guys out there can point me in right direction to fix, or just need to take out and spray volume control with tuner spray
i do have a few am only radios i could scrap parts from if need be

Dust/dirt in the control. You would need to remove the cover and gently blow it out and maybe use an electronics cleaner solvent. If the control is sealed, it may be wore out and need a new one. The open fin control in my shop radio does this and I have to blow out all the dust every year.
Just thought of this, find a pic of a replacement volume control and see if it is open or closed. If closed, get it replaced.

If you crank it all the way up and down 10-20 times it'll probably be ok.

It seems there used to be a way to blow something through the shaft to clean out the control.

CAIG DeoxIT D5 is legendary in guitar/amplifier & audiophile circles. Sometimes hard to locate locally and not cheap but a tiny bit goes a long way. I’ve used it to clear up noisy potentiometers on vintage audio equipment several times. Great stuff. If you have a Guitar Center near you, they should have it. Shoot a tiny bit up the shaft and turn the knob back and forth to work it in.

No problem. I've had my can for years now and it's a small can. It really just takes a small amount to do the trick. A guitarist friend of mine recommended it and when I researched it online, I saw that it's pretty much the go to product for clearing up scratchy pots.

ok, ive tried all the options so far, even found the guitar cleaning spray, nothing changes, any other ideas ?

can i pull the volume control from an AM only radio and use it in the AM/FM unit

The Dioxit should really do the trick if you get it into the wiper of the volume control.

It's hard to say if the AM volume control is the same as the FM without doing a deep dive on the schematics and comparing them physically. I'd say the chances of them being the same are not great. At least I think the factory FM unit on our trucks is Mono so "I'm saying there's a chance".

My radio volume is really noisy too. It's on the list of things to address on my truck.
