Re: Altman easy latch / door repair / gasket install for no slam doors

My door latch just broke on my 72 for the 2nd time so I am going to get these for it. It definitely looks like a quality set up.

Re: Altman easy latch / door repair / gasket install for no slam doors

Got mine installed the other day. Both doors now shut nicely. One snag I had was a striker bolt snapped right off when I tightened it down. If you take a closer look at them, they have a narrowing at the bottom of the threads. Summit sent me another kit to replace the strikers but I decided to order a different set that are thicker at the base. The pic shows the strikers I’m now using, bought on ebay. The threads were too long so I cut them down.

Re: Altman easy latch / door repair / gasket install for no slam doors

I couldn't resist and ordered a kit from Summit. I couldn't beat the price with free shipping and delivered the next day! I did some searching but can't find anything about setting up power locks with these latches. I'm sure someone has done it before? I've never installed power locks and am looking for any insight on how it would work with these latches so I can tackle it at the same time the latches go in. Thanks!

A universal actuator usually has hardware to attach on manual lock rod. So if the Altman latches use the stock door lock knob. Mount actuator inside door under rod and attach with provided hardware. Pretty easy.

Re: Altman easy latch / door repair / gasket install for no slam doors

Going thru new parts bins and I realized I never ordered the upgraded latch plates So i checked summit and they had 1 left in stock so I ordered it , When ordering thru Summit they are $88.99 and come with the stainless hardware , i checked the price from Trique manufacturing and they raised their price to $99.99 + shipping without the hardware . So if your considering ordering these get them thru Summit before they raise their price .

Re: Altman easy latch / door repair / gasket install for no slam doors

I bought a set of these as well, easy-peasy to install. I used my DeWalt cordless saws-all to cut out the area on the door. This are the initial installation photos. I do plan on edging the latch with SEM Seam Sealer. I do like what everyone has been doing regarding painting these AELs, I will do the same. It gives it a more factory look and not like it was an 'add-on' item. I must say, the doors close with no effort what so ever.

What issues have you guys used to resolve the weatherstripping? I've heard numerous complaints that after install and new Precision door weatherstripping that they are still a pain to shut. Any suggestions?

I just ordered mine from summit on July 3rd and they still have them listed at the lower price. They are out of stock and they said they ship directly from the manufacturer. It looks like they ship at the end of the month.

I agree, the biggest pet peeve I have in mine is the door slamming. I will do whatever it takes to make them close easily even if I have to chop the door/jam area to reduce the weatherstripping compression
Someone at GMC Paul's told me that it's often the part on the rocker panel that the seal pushes into. Sure enough, I smacked mine a few places near the front of the door with a 2x4 and a sledge hammer, and it made a noticeable difference. There's a video somewhere showing how a guy did that and a few other things to get the doors aligned and closing easily BEFORE paint, which is obviously the way to do it.

Whatever you do, get some good push-on seals, like those made by Precision, not the glue-on type.
