Fuel Filter Location ? (Inline)

I want to put an inline fuel filter on my 72 C30 as Im replacing the in carb filter sometimes twice per day from gummy sludge type stuff .Has anyone ever put a metal inline filter under the passenger side cab ,it would be easy to access to replace it but am open to suggestions.

Re: Fuel Filter Location ? (Inline)

Which engine does your truck have? Generally it is not a good idea to run a filter before the fuel pump because it can cause the pump to not function properly and could cause vapor lock problems.

I normally run one between the fuel pump and the carb.

That being said I know some people have had no problems running a filter between the gas tank and fuel pump.

Re: Fuel Filter Location ? (Inline)

I've read the same thing - don't put a filter between the tank and pump.

useless info:
they often end up before the pump as after is all hard line and people don't want to cut it......

Re: Fuel Filter Location ? (Inline)

hmm weird. mine has one between the metal that came out of the cab and the metal attached to the frame rail. I just reran some lines and left it. old tanks with crap in them i figure one before the the pump cant hurt. Its carbed and only needs a few psi anyway.

Since 1991 I've driven these trucks every day with an inline filter in the rubber line between the cab and frame rail. Never any problems. I guess now that I've read it on the internet I should change my policy.

Re: Fuel Filter Location ? (Inline)

if you r plugging a fuel filter twice a day the thing to do would b to pull your tank and clean it to solve the problem rather than climbing under the truck and layin in a puddle of gas twice a day changing filters

My son runs a fuel filter on his trucks in the same place as you do and has never had a problem.

I was running one on a motorhome in the fuel line under the cab before the pump. I kept having vapor lock problems on a trip across country and could not find the problem until we got to Mohave California. I crawled under the motorhome to check for problems and by chance felt the filter, it was hot because the exhaust was near. I guess the combination of the pressure drop across the filter and the close exhaust caused the vapor lock problems. When we got home to the the Bay Area I ran new 3/8" line (the original line was 5/16") with a filter away from the exhaust and never had a problem again.

I know I do tend to get long winded at times, lol.

Re: Fuel Filter Location ? (Inline)

My truck has the original 350 engine in it and I just installed a new gas tank and sending unit in it ,new fuel lines too but just the rotted rubber ones .I figure the gunk is coming from the metal lines ,no rust debris ,just gunk.

Re: Fuel Filter Location ? (Inline)

I would put a large filter for a fuel injected vehicle in there. They have a huge capacity and very good filtration.

if you figure the crap is in the fuel lines and you r putting a fuel filter b4 the fuel line ? what good is the filter going to do?

lstge filters for injection systems ? most require high pressure and will not work with a machanical pump

Re: Fuel Filter Location ? (Inline)

Forget the internet, I am damaged for life because I had two different vehicles (Chevy and Mopar) that would bog down at WOT (usually about 1/8 mile into a WOT run). After wasting time with ignition and carb tuning (floats), I figured it was fuel delivery. So I started with replacing the fuel filter (no help), the fuel pump (no help), the whole fuel line (no help), and I was still seeing the same WOT bog (sometimes a hard stall!). So I decided to string a temporary fuel pressure gauge into the system using a tee and rubber hose. After a few runs, I noticed the fuel pressure would drop to near zero. Turns out it was the fuel filter before the pump. I relocated it to after the pump and never had a problem again. Second time around on the other car, it didn't take me long to figure it out. And that taught me to never put a filter before the pump again. Plain experience. No heresay. I know some models came this way. So nowadays I look at the FSM or do other research to determine where the factory put the filter and what type of filter to use. And I use the design the factory intended OR I just put it after the pump by default if I have problems. Diaphragm pumps do a good job of pumping trash, so damaging the pump is never a concern.

I also agree with others, get the tank and lines sorted out. That is the root cause of your problem.

Not true. While the overall system is high-pressure and the filter is designed to withstand the higher pressure, it doesn't require high pressure to get flow through the filter. I've used a FI filter for years with no problem.

Re: Fuel Filter Location ? (Inline)

aautozone has 2 large can type FI filter on the uni shelf, one has threaded fitting like FI, the other has nipple ends for when you twist off the FI ends and needs to "fix" it quick.

Is it possible to bypass all the hard fuel line from under the cab to the fuel pump on a temporary basis with regular fuel line until I can order in new lines ?

Re: Fuel Filter Location ? (Inline)

my trucks "block pumps" pumped crud right to the filter just fine
when truck turned off I guess the crud fell/drained back to the pump
I removed it by taking off the line, pump to carb,
removed dizzy power wire to prevent fireing, ran another line to container
cranked a bit into container
found rusty sediment in the container after the gas evapourated

a lot of people just attach a new line beside the old rather then disturb the "lines"

Re: Fuel Filter Location ? (Inline)

This truck is going to get new hard lines as soon as I can .At the moment Im fine changing filters in the carb as it only takes a few minutes to do so .Thanks for all of your opinions so far .I am going to add an in line filter that is on my workbench in the meantime and see if it makes any difference at all. Im having people come up wanting to buy this old truck daily wherever I go and I tell them all that I just got it and dont plan on selling . I told my wife the other day I was going to sell my 72 El Camino and she like to of had a fit and told me it nor my 2- 72 trucks were going anywhere.
