72 Blazer Evap Control System Questions

I'm putting a crate 350 in my 72 Blazer. I decided tI drop the tank and clean out the old gas. I'm glad I did, cause it just don't smell like gas anymore. Man, what EPA is doing!

Anyway, I'm hesitant to fully replace the evap system. I'm not trying to keep this Blazer completely stock. I'd like to keep from having to run vacuum to whatever was under the hood. I'm really not sure what's supposed to be happening there anyway.

Any advice on how far to go? The vent hoses from the tank to the canister in the LR quarter panel are connected.

Any help is appreciated.
