SWB Fleetside bed question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Somebody put a tonneau cover on my bed years ago. I guess back then, they weren't to caring about how it was installed. They put the snaps on the outside of the bed about 3" from the top of the bed.

Well, I removed them, welded up the holes, and filled it. My question is this: Are the sides of the bed flat, or do they have a very slight out outward radius to about the center of the wheel arch, then radius back in? If they are flat, I have a heck of a lot more sanding. If they are slightly arched outward, then I am probably done.

for the life of me, I have no clue what you're attempting to explain. My thought, if you have a question, simply find a 67-72 Chevy/GMC in your area and take a look to give you the info you need.

That's a little hard this time of year sine they are probably all in storage. No worries. JDL understood without any issue.

I'm not sure what the arched comment refers to. Maybe he meant slanted above the arch. It is slightly slanted in all the same front to back. 'Back then" it was those who cared more than others either about looks or to protect the bed who had tonneau covers. That's what a tonneau cover is and that's the only way they were installed. It was many years later that the modern frame-type tonneaus came to be. GM offered snap on tonneau covers as an accessory. It was not uncommon to see expensive European sports cars, like Porches, to have snap-on tonneau covers installed. It was on open top cars where the concept of tonneau covers began, then carried over to customized pickups later

Back in the 80's and 90's I built 100's of tonneau covers on truck beds and the last thing I said to every owner is "You understand I'm going to drill dozens of holes in your truck and pop rivit the snaps on ?" I even put a few on my own trucks , I'll probably put one of the new no drill ones on my 67 when it's time .

If you really want to make sure the contours match use something like this. It's used by flooring and carpenter to go sound odd shapes.
