How to properly shorten a Fiberglass tool box insert

Ok so I am playing around and deciding if I want to add a tool box door to my 67 short bed. I really like it and I have figured out all of the metal outside stuff to make it look correct and factory like. Now what I have no knowledge about is fiberglass. I was curious if anyone can inform me on a way to section out this and not have it looked hacked or half way done? I would like to figure this out before I add the door to my bedside.

Re: How to properly shorten a Fiberglass tool box insert

Here's my input on this situation.

#1 - Cardboard is your friend.

Make one out of cardboard.
it does not have to be perfect.
This will give you the idea and master plan.

#2 - The side that will be seen the most is the left side.
So leave it alone.

I would shorten the (Front) right side cap to make it fit.

#3 - If you are working on this with the bed off the truck the front will be easier to sand and do the adjusting and fitting where you can see what is going on.

#4 - once you get a pattern in card board slice the top and bottom of the front side a sand it till it fits.

#5 - Fiberglass and resin and sand till it looks like it was Factory edition

Re: How to properly shorten a Fiberglass tool box insert

I think I need to take a identical sliver from each side so the latch and hinge screws remain in the center. I'd probably eliminate the center hinge

Re: How to properly shorten a Fiberglass tool box insert

That sounds like a plan.
You can make a temple to see how it will look.
How much shorter is the short bed (in the front section) compared to the long bed?
The 2 hinges will make it easier to make for sure.

Yes. Here is a picture of one done but if you look close I believe it was cut and tucked into itself the be shortened and I don't like that. I was thinking taking 4 inches ( aproximate) from each side right beside of the latch. That way the profiles look even and the hinges still even from each other. There would be 2 butt style seems 3 inches apart close to the center. Just don't want to make it too weak.

Re: How to properly shorten a Fiberglass tool box insert

is there something special about the area where the latch and hinges are?
fiberglass is fairly easy to work with...the best option would be take a section out of the center, and join the 2 ends in the middle..but removng a section from either side of the latch will work also
you can leave a small gap between the pieces for resin to flow into , and overlap the fiber over the cuts on the outside of the box for the strength,,,then sand the inside smooth..the outside wont show as it will be under the bed

Make sure you cut (NOT) in a straight line.
This will add Rigidity.

Re: How to properly shorten a Fiberglass tool box insert

If it were me I’d try to do one cut but if you have to do too it would just mean more work. The best way to do fiberglass is to taper both sides of the but joint about 20 to 25 degrees scarf tip cut I would do this on the outside of the Box now tape the seem on the inside after it’s taped if necessary reinforce by tapping paint sticks where you need it. Now you can fill the beveled area with fiberglass mesh and Resin after it sets up you can sand it down flush. this is typically how fiberglass repairs are made

Exactly, I’ll add each layer should be a bit wider than the previous for strength

Re: How to properly shorten a Fiberglass tool box insert

Yes layer it until you have built it up to at lest the same thickness you can also screw the reinforcement to the box if you’re having trundle with tape you just have a few holes to fill and as mentioned an of set cut isn’t needed

I think I'm going to pass on this idea. The more I talk to people the more I'm discouraged about it. Too much to go wrong here.

The extra storage space will be worth the effort.
