700r4

Looking at putting a 700r4 trans in my 72 c10 2wd. Can you reuse the speedo cable?

Re: 700r4

Some 700's do have a provision for a speedo cable, but the transmission is physically longer. Depending on the routing of your cable, you may need a longer speedo cable.

You'll also need to remove the riveted crossmember and move that as well. The oil pan doesn't clear the stock crossmember, so you'll either have to notch the crossmember, or get an aftermarket one.

Is there a reason you're choosing the 700r4, over the 2004r? The 200 is only slightly longer and can usually get away without shortening the driveline.

What rear gears do you have, and what do you plan to run?

Re: 700r4

General Information
The 2004R is 1/8" longer than the Short Tail Shaft TH350

The 200R4 rear mount is 6-3/8" further back than the TH350

The 200R4 and TH350 output shafts are the same spline/yoke

99.9% of the time, other than relocating the cross member back 6-3/8", a 2004R will bolt right in.

The 2004R's are getting scarce since they only made them about 10+/- years

Re: 700r4

Had a 700R4 installed in my truck, 72 C10 with a 350 engine and TH350 trans, and yep had to get dive shaft shortened and move the cross member but installer said there were holes in the frame that lined up exactly. Used the original speedo cable too.

Re: 700r4

I installed a 700R4 in a '72 outfitted originally with a 350/350, and I had to drill new holes for the crossmember. I installed a 700R4 in my current '68 outfitted originally with a 307/Powerglide, and also had to drill holes for the crossmember. The holes i drilled were very close to some existing holes. It's possible they might have worked if I had scooted the engine support brackets. Also had to drill new holes for the shifter linkage where it attaches to the frame rail.
