Warm clothing, no problem. Warm gloves that allow dexterity, still searching. Freezing fingers chase me out of the cold.

Have you looked at battery operated heated gloves? I've seen these but haven't tried them or spoken to anyone yet who has.

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

Spending the day to get ready for the storm to hit here , Not to worried about snow fall but we''ll have rain todays high is 52 and tomorrow about 50 until it rolls in at 10:00 pm and drops 45 degrees fast and all that rain is going to freeze everything solid with the low friday at 10 with wind gusts to 40 mph and that will be what takes out the power around here , So I'm planning for the power to be out for days and sub zero temps , Filling the extra gas / diesel containers I bought another 5 gallon gas container the other day when i picked up the generator and it has the most useless nozzle I've ever seen , I haven't figuired out how it works yet ! I had a 1500 watt infrared heater we used in the house for about 7 years and it died last spring , So I found a new one just down the road at tractor supply ( My favorite store ) On sale for $99.00 it works great I plugged it in last night and it raised the temp in the house to 76 with the heat off , I had to turn it down , I'm going to pick up another one to keep the chill out of the garage . We've over prepared for this storm but thats what you do in the hills of E Tn There's nothing worse than sitting in a cold dark house for possibly days once the roads ice up here your staying home for days they won't prep the roads with the rain coming before the temps drop .

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

Today is 1st day of winter.

Our forecast.
High today of 49* and sunny.
High in the 40s tomorrow with falling temps overnight to --------> 4* with snow chance and wind chills -15 to -30* (they do mention "flurries & dusting of snow", around here that usually means we'll get measurable snow activity.)
Friday back up to 20*s. Saturday and Sunday about the same.
Next week, 40s again.
Sure glad this will be a swift moving front.

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

Local weather guesser says tomorrow's high is a single digit of " 1 " degree with a low of -4, Friday is 7 with a low of -1. Wind is the big factor here in the flat lands of Kansas. Predicting wind chills of -25 to -40 below zero Thurs and Friday. Local snow fall is only predicted for 1-3'' but the blowing snow will create a "white out" situation for travel. Filled our indoor firewood box I made years ago from some oak pallets I had on hand. About 5' long and 2 1/2' deep. Holds enough for two maybe three days. Filled a wheel barrow full of firewood, put it on the deck just outside the door and tied a tarp down on it. Wood shed about 30 foot from the deck has about two cords of wood cut, split and stacked.

A few winters ago we lost power for two days. Did the cooking on the gas stove, used the fire place to keep the house bearable. It's a big house, just over 2,300 sq. ft. first floor. Have a hand crank Baygen radio for news and entertainment and half dozen battery LED lanterns plus a few oil lamps.

With all that I'm more than ready for spring! Not a cold weather person
which is somewhat odd, LOL. Born in Wisconsin about 60 miles NW of where member DeadheadNM (Pete) is located in Eau Claire, Wis.

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

Last week the power went out again , another tree fell I pulled out a couple dual fuel coleman lanterns and installed new mantles and filled them with fuel to be ready for the next power outage and it wasn't even cold . It seems the older I get the more prepared I try to be .

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

You guys stay warm. We’ve had the cold snap for well over a week. Lows between 0-10 every night since last Monday(week and half ago almost) . Highs around freezing. I think we start to work back to the high 30’s low 40’s during the day by the weekend. My wood stove has been running balls to the wall with no breaks to completely shovel the ash this whole time. Luckily we didn’t get much snow but the mountains of southwest CO are covered pretty nice. Im ready for May.

yup- be prepared.
filled up the 4x4's and my propane tanks.
gassed the trucks cause they never plow our street and you usually need 4by to get out, and a lot-o-propane for my heater if the power dies. so far just a few localized outages, but hasn't hit our part of the grid yet.
my heater is approx 40 yrs old, but will never get rid of it, heats my 480sq ft shop in about 5 mins, i have in the past put it near the back door and heated our house with it....will be a sad day if it ever dies

township never plows our road, i guess we don't rate...but they sure do make sure they get their taxes out of us every yr. last yr i actually got a letter from the city saying i needed to shovel my sidewalk, told them ya, soon as you send a dam plow down our street.
of course after me and my son finished shovelling the driveway, my buddy came chugging down the street on his Kubota, so he opened up the end of my driveway and took a pass down our street with it so the non 4x4 owners on our street can get out....pretty sad my buddy has to do what city won't do with my tax dollars

We bailed out of Wisconsin 2 days before Thanksgiving and arrived in the Phoenix area Thanksgiving night. I used to love cross country skiing and snowmobiling and still have 4 sleds sitting in the garage. However, we are glad to be in Arizona until spring. A little cool the last few nights, but last I heard it will be 72* Christmas day. We'll be glad to return home in spring though.

Hope everyone stays warm & safe through the storm! It won't hit us on the west coast, so no worries here.... well, maybe earthquakes.

Grumpy, if your new fuel can nozzle is anything like mine.... I remove it and pour straight out of the can. Works better that way.

I switched it with an old one , I'll have to post a picture of it , There is NO WAY this thing can be used by 1 person . A few years back I read a story of one fuel container company going out of business after many years due to multiple law suits filed on them for not having an idiot proof self shut off nozzle , Now They don't work at all ,

Here's the story .

Don’t have to worry about heat the wood stove heats the house nicely . The genny is used for lights ,fridge ,freezers and cooking . Not to worried about how cold it’ll get been colder here . But like grumpy said the two day rain and some snow at the end is going to freeze solid . We still have 7 inches of icy snow on the ground .I may take the FEL and make some berms let it fill with water and let the kids ice skate . The town does that at the park near my rental every year if there’s enough snow they fill it with fire hydrant

I use the race fuel containers they still have vents and a working nozzle . I also have two of these Eagle cans . I got these when a friend moved the two old gas cans never had gas in them he used them for kerosene inside is like new . Outside is in very good shape also . He tossed in all those newer pos plastic cans . When I saw tossed he literally threw them in the truck as I was leaving.

Pic of the can I got a couple years ago. It's a PITA to get fuel out of it. Gotta press on the red plastic gizmo on the spout. I can do it by myself, but it's easier to just remove it.

Yep, same here, the wood stove runs 24/7. We also have electric water heater but the Generac doesn't mind.

I got beer tonight but I hope that wasn't too soon. This rain then sharp drop in temps will equal everything Superglued and hard frozen ground. Has gotten a bit crusty a few mornings, but this is a big step ahead. 50* and an inch of rain dropping to single digits by evening on Friday. It's not getting above freezing until Tuesday, 34*. 39 om Wed. Things will be staying frozen through all that

With wood heat you can always have warm water. I love getting snowed in. I get all 1800s and really enjoy it. That won't be the case this time. Probably start as snow just before sun-up, then a lot of rain

So about 2 inches of snow today. Better than the 5 inches of snow they were predicting. High of about -1 today. Tomorrow its going to be all about the wind. 30-40 out of the north west in the afternoon. More snow also.

I don't think that would be a lot of fun in this weather. I hope they are not far from civilization.
