Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

Watching the weather channel you Californians are going to get another big storm this week . It's hard to believe that most of the state is still in exceptional to extreme drought . All the while your standing in a couple of feet of water in what used to be a road .

But hopefully you will stay in this pattern albeit not the severe but rainy.

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

The weather and news people are creating new names for weather events now days. "atmospheric river" and "bomb cyclone" are currently used for new fronts coming in from the west. For dramatic impact, I know.
But I sure hope everyone heeds the warnings.

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

Pic of my downtown during the "storm" a few days ago. This was about all we got, and it's all gone now. There's even a lot of bare ground on the 7500' mountain a few miles out of town.
Lots of rain forecast for us, hopefully snow in the high country. Very little snowpack up there so far.

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

70% chance of rain today and didn't even spit. I do see now that it passed south and east of here. It was murky, but so warm. T-shirt warm. Like yesterday, set a record at BWI Airport (official location) of 69*. Today's record is 70* and it only got up to 65*. brrrrrr

We'll be getting back to normal nice weather by the weekend, mid-upper 40s

The weatherpersons are always wrong? Right

They got a 50/50 percent shot to get it right.

Son-n-Law and his Buddy went sledding Friday to the Cabin. Plenty of Snow for the spring runoff. Kalifornia is the only place you can be in a drought and flood stage at the same time.

We haven't had a measurable snow yet this winter. January 25th is the record latest first snow. Raining now.

We've had two measurable snows one in November and mid December. Rain and mild from there on

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

We’ve had a rough couple weeks areas to the near north of me in Colorado have had 6+ feet in the last week and a half, and too the near south have had 2 feet in the same time. We’ve had about 8”. gets old pretty quick because it all turns to mud and makes working in it miserable. Chains on all four corners and not a single sign of what color the truck is under all the mud. It was -10 with the windchill this morning and not supposed to be above freezing until Friday. At least the mud is froze too

I’m not complaining about the precip though, our wet weather from the summer has carried over nicely to the winter. We should be in excellent shape water wise as summer approaches and the spring/summer run off begins. Most of our drinking and irrigating water comes from the Colorado mountains.

This winter has been one few I remember where the state of NM has actually used large quantities of salt to thaw the roads. I’ve been washing my wife’s Yukon and my company truck multiple times a week to try and keep it at bay. Everything else has been parked until it’s all gone.

28 degrees here this morning, supposed to go up to 53. That can't come soon enough for me.

I did drive by the lake the other day and it looks like a lake again. It was looking pretty sorry before. So that's a positive.

I still can't wait until spring gets here.

Hey, are you lost? This ain't the 'Can't Wait Till...' thread here! I've got news for you, Paul. You CAN and you WILL wait till spring. Not to single YOU out. I'm afraid that's just how things work around here

Sounds like we are having California weather here. Depends on what part of the huge state you are talking about, right? Back East people think of Southern CA beach weather.

We are expecting snow tomorrow morning... mixing into rain the rest of the day. If it's measurable it will tie the record for latest day of measurable snow (at BWI Airport). Every day in January so far has been above average. Nothing crazy warm, pretty even keel. That's what's unusual compared to recent years. Our average temperature hasn't changed but it has been anything but average, bouncing back and forth from record or close to it high to record or close to it low. When I do an average it comes out on it.

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

My new Sony replacement clock for the el cheapo 35 year old (LCD) one that gave up the ghost insists on resetting itself to 15 minutes ahead of the actual time whenever I set it. I haven't tried setting it 15 minute late yet.

It was 12* here. It seems the wind has stopped and it will be a sunny 34* today. Even yesterday wasn't so bad since the wind doesn't hit here directly much. I was outside most of the day. I've been waiting for the ground to freeze to dig more dirt out of my cellar so I can wheel the barrow across my earlier fill that is soft. Topping out at 32* today as the cold drifts away. About 50* tomorrow and by Wed/Thurs we'll have 58*/59*... and rain. It's looking more and more like a spring snow on it's way

Yep. When the economy was real terrible back a while, barely any work being done, storm damage saved me more than once. I'd get work and on some got the firewood.

This was March 2nd '18, 60 mph wind, native red oak, house built in '70. A tree service craned it off and had it gone in 3 hrs

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

The Cummins started at 5 degrees without being plugged in . I’ve never plugged it in to heat the block since I’ve owned it . And unlike others have no problem with the heat . See guys with the covers over their grills to block the airflow . Takes a bit longer but it gets to normal temps without the cover .

Re: Severe cold weather and a white Christmas

I always heard those Cummins start pretty good. I recall guys saying they hardly ever wait for glow plugs. When I had diesels I stopped plugging them in unless we got arctic air. Running power all night to a heater, especially when you might not be going anywhere the next day, negates the economic advantage of diesel. I probably started when they decided to start charging more for diesel than gas.

It’s been a good truck . The Cummins has a grid heater in the air intake no glow plugs . The grid heater is more for emissions than starting . It stops the black smoke at idle at start up ,I use it but I sometimes forget and it starts right up . Few of the guys I know have deleted them .
