The pictures below have the shortened tilt column & a unrestored truck tilt column to show the difference in the length.

Re: Shortened Automatic tilt steering column

I am looking for a shortened but on the engine side if that makes sense. I added rack and pinion so I needed a bit more for that connection. Is there two ways to shorten these? May be a silly question but didn't know where it is shorter if that make sense?
I can't remember if the firewall mount is fixed or slides it's been a long time since I had mine out.
Thanks
Dave

This column is shortened at the top to give more room in the cab. You do not have a lot of room at the bottom to shorten the column, how much room do you need to connect to your steering?

Re: Shortened Automatic tilt steering column

Thanks Don. That's what I assumed. I currently have the steering hooked up and working. It just has a little catch as the joint is close to the limit. I was told thebbest option is to get a shorter column. I would rather stay gm. In fact I currently have a truck tilt. I'm not sure how much is really needed. I figured the 1.5 inches would do it. Looking at my column it do see it is close now to the outer housing. Can a van tilt be shortened any more or is it the same story?
Thanks
Dave

Dave, the truck tilt, the van tilt & the RV tilt all have the same length column tube. The truck & RV tilt have the same length splined shaft. The van splined shaft is 2 1/2” longer at the bottom of the column. I took some pictures of a truck tilt & a van tilt to show you. If you only need 3/4” of a inch I could get that by having a van splined shaft cut down 3/4” shorter & have it resplined. Another 5/8” to 3/4” could be gained by shortening the bottom of the tube between the bearing & shift arm. Just throwing a couple of options to you to gain some space without creating other problems.

Re: Shortened Automatic tilt steering column

How do these columns work with say a 700R4 or 4l60e transmission, they have 4 forward gears and the pic of the shift indicator on yours only shows 3 forward gears ?

They make a 4 speed overdrive indicator lense. Several places sell them, LMC , Brothers & several other parts vendors. Just change the lense out & you have will have adjust the neutral safety switch. It is not a perfect fix since these column’s wasn’t designed for a overdrive transmission but it does work ok. You can’t have any excessive wear & play in your transmission linkage.

Sounds good. If any good "driver" quality ones come up, let me know. I'll keep an eye out on new posts.

Thanks!

Re: Shortened Automatic tilt steering column

Don,

Interested in purchasing one of your shortened columns. Do you have them on hand? How much to ship to Nebraska? Do you take Pay Pal? Any references?

Send me private mail.

Yes, I still shorten tilt steering columns. I do not have any extra columns built right now. When I get caught up with orders I will build a couple.
