Time for a freshen up on the 68 C20!

Well, it’s been awhile since I last posted. Still have been reading and learning on the site. What knowledge is available on here is incredible! I took a early retirement from my job of 33 years and my wife says to get the truck running better for your retirement present. HELL YEAH!!! So the 327 got dropped off at the engine shop for a rebuild and I ordered a new filter and shift kit for the turbo 400. Decided to have the original 327 rebuilt because the LS swap is just not for me. (Not dissing it at all!) Motor dude says I should have around 350 hp which is good for me. Biggest decision so far is headers or 2 1/2” ram horns? Any thoughts are welcome. Also, going to possibly swap out the HO52 4:10 rear end sometime soon as well. Just thought I would share with my fellow enthusiasts!

Beautiful truck....

I vote ram horns because a) you aren't wanting a hot rod (I think) and b) every set of headers I've ever had either leaked or had to be dented to fit properly.

Re: Time for a freshen up on the 68 C20!

Awesome deal on the retirement and freshening up the truck. I will never put a set of headers on a vehicle again...I'm too old, they are too loud, and for about 1 HP per cubic inch (in that ballpark) a set of cast manifolds can work just fine. When approaching the 1HP/CI, I have always port matched the exhaust manifolds to a "more open" set of gaskets (along with the heads) to maximize their throughput. This can be done on the intake side too, but If I had to choose to just do one...I'd do the exhaust side when using manifolds over headers.

Thanks guys! I’m 99% sure on the ram horns! 👍

Ramhorns all the way! I love the look of that truck.

Congrats on retirement. My first day of retirement is next Monday.

Re: Time for a freshen up on the 68 C20!

It says "Speed Shop" on the doors, so headers! J/K, rams horn manifolds work too, I guess, maybe.

BTW, my Summit stainless full-length headers went on with no fitment issues and no leaks.

Beautiful truck.

Thanks! Do you have a part number for the headers by chance? Maybe I’ll check them out.

I have basically the same truck as yours, '68, 327, TH400 with the 4.10 rear end. I am just finishing up the new brakes on the Dana 60 3.54 rear end to install in mine. I think it will make it a lot more fun to drive. Luckily my engine is in really good shape so I don't have to do anything to it. Another vote for the stock manifolds from me but I'm an old fuddy-duddy so that figures...

Good luck with your retirement and your rebuild.

Re: Time for a freshen up on the 68 C20!

LockDoc,
Is the rear ended swap a direct fit? I was trying to find out what years, if any, are a direct simple swap.
Still leaning towards some Corvette style 2 1/2” center ram horns.
Thanks a bunch!

Sure thing! I believe they're made by Flowtech for Summit. 304 Stainless. P/N SUM-G9006-SS. They sound great with my Magnaflows. Unfortunately Summit may not get them back in stock until June 18th - another reason to go with the manifolds:

Yes, with the Dana rear end I have it is a direct bolt in, but the Dana 60 3.54 coil spring rear ends are kind of hard to find. Used in big block trucks only.
