Air compressor - add an extra tank?

I have a 20 gallon oil less compressor. It doesn’t do that well with a DA. You guys know if I could add a tank to it, to have it keep up? Or is it futile trying to do this?

It will never keep up with a DA sander , if you have the space and plan on doing your own work a 60 gallon will work and new they are about $600.00 so considering the money you'll save on paying someone else it's a good investment.

Only problem with that is, I don’t have 220V in the garage.

You young guys have never had to block out an entire vehicle by hand. Come on, it'll build up your upper body endurance!

It is easy to add a 220 outlet in your garage assuming you have the space in your panel for it.

I don’t think it’s that easy here; it’s a condo. The electrical panel is inside, and I believe I would need to cut a bunch of ceiling drywall to get to it, to make another run.
The garage just has 120 for the garage opener and one outlet.

Re: Air compressor - add an extra tank?

I've never heard of a condo board letting anyone run a compressor or do body work in a HOA ,

Yeah, doesn’t mean I follow the rules. Here’s a Buick I had about 10 years ago. Same garage.

I'm the same way.. I find it easier to ask forgiveness than to ask permission. No offense, but I bet your neighbors love you..

Congratulations on sticking it to the condo Nazi's. I've never lived in a condo or an HOA. I don't think that I would fare well.

I put in a 60 gallon compressor. It wasn't a big deal. I still have it I guess. It's in my rental house. The movers wouldn't take it.

I guess that I shouldn't have told them that it was a tank full of Nitroglycerin. My bad.

Re: Air compressor - add an extra tank?

For air compressors, tank storage is the battery, the pump is the charger. Once the battery is drained you have to wait for the charger to fill things up.

The last oil less compressor I had made a lot of noise but didn't pump much air. Picked up a 2HP twin cylinder single stage on a 30 gallon tank via a Northern Tool referb sale. 110V. Big improvement over the oil less unit and a lot quieter. Not big enough to run air tools full time but it was all the compressor I had space for in my 10x20 shop/utility/laundry room in my former house.

This is 100% true, but not the whole story. The problem is with "duty cycle", which the amount of time the motor runs in a given period. It is usually expressed as a percentage or as a number that is in minutes per hour.
So a small, inefficient compressor has to run a lot longer to keep a larger tank volume filled. You are running the motor to death, which is not only hard on the motor itself, it is also running the pump. As the pump runs so much, it is not getting rid of the heat, also a problem. This causes condensation and as the air cools, the water builds up in the system. All of this accelerates wear on everything.
Of course this happens with all compressors, but to a lesser degree when properly sized for the volume of air that you are using.
