I have been working on gaps for a few months. Just take your time. I was worried about the hood gaps but it’s not too bad.

Re: 57 Truck build

Worked on the drivers side today. I cut the fender and moved it 1/4 in in to fix the gap. I started working on the height until the aftermarket hinge decided to break. So I had to take the hood off the hinges and lay the hood in place so I could finish. I’m planning on ordering some Edie Motor Sport hinges. I still have to get the height right and Tac in place. The I can take it apart and finish welding / grinding the fenders.

Re: 57 Truck build

that is some kinda angle on your steering column U joint.
got some welding to do, lol. might as well do both sides at the same time so nothing gets too hot and warps. gonna be awhile.

I get a lot of flack on the angle and I still have to work it out. I was mocking it up and that was the best I could do in the time frame just so I could push and steer it. I’m going to switch the headers out for some cast hooker headers so I can get more clearance to give it more clearance. It doesn’t bind at all. I was looking at other builds and some of them have a steep angle also. I’m working on both sides but the cheap hood hinge broke so I have to order the expensive ones now so I can continue the lines.

Thanks! As you know it’s a work in progress. I’m doing some things I didn’t have to do on my other builds. Here is my friends 58 I did the metal work on and my 62 I did a few years ago. Those didn’t seem as long as this one.

Re: 57 Truck build

With help of Slammed 57 and my other buddy I finally got the tilt hood working right. i had to change to it because the repopulated hinges broke on me right after I had the gaps done. It was a Real pain in the ass to get this thing working. You would think for $400 it would work right out of the box. Next is finish weld the fenders and grind.

Re: 57 Truck build

I like it! I’m still contemplating doing the same thing. My hood hinges may need to be replaced so I may venture in the same direction! Looking great

Re: 57 Truck build

Last night I received my cast headers so I could have more clearance on the steering shaft. Today I removed the temporary bracket and made a new one and for the rerouted shaft. It’s a lot better now. I also removed the engine to relocate the proportion valve to the frame and ran the lines. I’m not real happy with the rear brake line so I might have to redo it. Next week I tear it apart and start the finish welding on the frame then blast and paint.

Re: 57 Truck build

Did a little more work On the frame today. I cut the frame for the new C Notch and welded it in on the inside. I’ll fully weld, grind and body worked once I get the cab off and I can rotate the frame.

Re: 57 Truck build

Did al little more dirty work today. F
Front end is completely out and ready for clean up. I finished grind the Outside and top of the c notch and started removing the rust from the frame. Tomorrow will be removing the rear axle and flipping the frame to finish weld and prep for paint. 63 years of crap on the frame takes a while to get it off.

Re: 57 Truck build

Topside all welded up and wired wheeled. I removed the rear axle and springs today and planning on power washing the axle to remove all the gunk. I placed the frame on the sawhorses upside down to finish the bottom. I didn’t want to lay on my back eat sparks all day. I have seen that. murtiatic acid Removes rust. So I’m planning on giving that a try on the frame to clean it out of all the tight spaces.

Re: 57 Truck build

Careful using muriatic acid. You’ll need lots of baking soda mixed with water to neutralize it. Otherwise it will continue to oxidize at an even faster rate after it’s applied.

Re: 57 Truck build

After removing all the unnecessary riveted on things on my chassis, I took the chassis to the powder coater and had them sand blast it . Only took the afternoon.

I then took it home and gave it two coats of Duplacolor self etching primer and two coats of Duplacolor semi gloss black paint . By the evening it was ready to start the next day .

This gave me a non rusting chassis to work on for less then $ 200 .

Then the fun began with the installation of the boxing plates , the I.F.S. Cross member and rear brackets for the fat bar rear suspension. All that was required was a little grinding where the welding was to be done and afterwards touch up with self etch primer and paint.

Sure beats grinding for days and gives you a painted chassis read for assembly.
