Re: 57 Truck build

No problem. That’s what the form is for, helping people. I like what you did with your frame. I installed did my front end almost two years ago but never fully welded in. My friend sold his shop and I had to put it together and bring it home. Then I started on the sheet metal work. So now I’m trying to get it finished and painted so I gain get done with my build. Nice work on your chassis!

Re: 57 Truck build

Thanks, doing it this way I didn’t have to take it back apart to clean and paint then reassemble. Allows me to keep building layer after layer .

I would have done it that way too if I didn’t have to bring it home. This time it will be a full chassis with engine in before I put the cab back on. I will even do a start up of the 4.8.

Re: 57 Truck build

I used the KBS frame coater kit and I have spent two weeks of sanding and respraying trying to get it to look right. I dont recommend the products all. Finally got it looking ok and I’ll start putting it back together tomorrow.

Re: 57 Truck build

I have been working on small to dos on the frame for the past few weeks. I lost some motivation when the KBS system crapped out on me. It too two weeks to get the frame looking ok. This weekend I ran the fuel lines and painted the rear diff and I’ll try to get it in place this week so I can move on to building the exhaust. I now have all the parts except the v bands. I still have to make some brackets to to hold the fuel lines next to the engine.

Thanks! I seem to be moving an inch instead of a foot. Today I finished reassembling my rear diff and making my power steering lines. Tomorrow I’ll install the diff and tighten everything down. Up next is the exhaust mock up. Diy kit and mufflers are on hand.

Re: 57 Truck build

I know my posts have been a little boring but I finally feel like I accomplished something! The painted rear end is in and it’s a roller again. Next week I’ll start working on getting the exhaust cut and tacked together and hopefully on the the emergency brake set up. Any recommendations out there? I’m looking at the American shifter trans mount. Hadn’t really decided if I want another shifter sticking out of the floor board. Recommendations welcome.

Re: 57 Truck build

I went with the Sidewinder shifter (Art Carr Winters) for a few reasons. Firstly it's cable operated which is easier to hook up and makes positioning more flexible. Next it's available with neutral safety and reverse light switches which are way easier than messing with wiring at the trans. I plan to replace the knob with something a bit taller.

Looking good. Nice to have it rolling again! I just looked into that American shifter E-brake kit... I like it.

Re: 57 Truck build

Started to get the exhaust together last week and ran out of time. Tomorrow I’m planning on finish welding, turn downs and hangers. I don’t think it’s to bad for the frat time doing it.

Summit brand $26 dollars. They sound just like Flowmaster but much cheaper.

Re: 57 Truck build

I have straight dumps out of my Magnaflows and I’ve got some major drone at cruising rpm. Getting tail pipes next week and will see how it helps.

My 62 has dumps also and I get the same drone. I don’t know what I’m going to do because the tank and the read diff don’t give me any room to extend the pipes to the roll, pan. Thanks for the advice.

Re: 57 Truck build

You might try installing a 36” glass pack ahead of the muffler or a H pipe to balance the system to kill the drone .

I had a hard time with it due to the heat. The rust coater went on good except some runs that I had to sand out. Both the rust seal and Blacktop has to be put on thin to get it to look right. I also recommend that you order from KBS directly so you have fresh paint. I ordered mine from. Amazon and I received two quarts that were dried up. If you call them they will set you up with what you need. I’m also planning g on using their exhaust paint for my exhaust.
