2.2 motors

I just got a 89 S10 with a 2.2. I see Cavaliers and such with them. A guy down the street has a Sunfire or a Sunbird or whatever it is that I could get cheap. I'm just wondering if I could just swap the motors without a lot of drama. I want to keep the 4 banger for gas mileage. This is just going to be my beater truck and I don't want to spend a lot on it..

I'm not even sure if the current motor is toast or not. It snapped a belt and overheated. It's my buddy's truck and he never bothered with it. Just drove it home and parked it. He said that he thinks the head gasket is blown. I'm just trying to get it going again on the cheap. I only paid 400 bucks for it.

What's the difference (if any) between the 2.2's?

Re: 2.2 motors

Not much difference between these little motors....

Worth mentioning...starting in 1994 they went to sequential fuel injection of these....keep that in mind....I think the bare blocks are the same.

They overheat really well, especially when the fan belt snaps....so long as he didnt drive it too far and or get it too hot, it will need a head service and new head gasket etc....

I don't think that he drove it too far. He was at a bar visiting Mr. Jack Daniels so he wasn't too far away. Hopefully I can just get the head done and a kit and cross my fingers. The truck only has 124K on it. Which is not bad for an 89.

Re: 2.2 motors

If your S10 is an 89, it would have a 2.5 "Iron Duke" engine. That motor came out in 85 on the S10/S15, and got fuel injection in 86. 86-93 would be a direct fit, as long as the engine is 2.5.

You mentioned yours has a 2.2. The 2.2 didn't come out until the body change in 94.

The 2.2 is the same in the cavalier/sunfire. 94-97 interchange between truck and car, and 98+ interchange, as long as the car isnt a DOHC Ecotec. Cars and trucks use different intake manifolds, exhaust manifolds, oil pans and pick up tubes, so you'll have to swap those from your truck engine.

Thanks. I thought it was a 2.2 but isn't the 2.5 a better motor? There's one on CL for 400 bucks right now but it has higher mileage than mine and it's listed as a 2.4. I didn't know if it would fit. I don't know these motors at all.

My buddy's keep telling me to just put in a SBC. But what's the difference in mileage? And wouldn't that be expensive? I'm not trying to build a hotrod with this one.

These fuel prices are killing me on my big truck. I'd just like an economical beater that I can scratch up and not sweat it.

Re: 2.2 motors

10 L/100 is 23 1/2 us mpg, 28 imperial.

My truck stays parked until it needs to haul something, then I think it's worth it. Maybe 13 or 14 L/100 km, just guessing.

Volvo XC90 3.2 cost me $117 last time I filled it. It's my wife's car. 11L/100k

My 64 Rambler 232 3.8 (forerunner to the Jeep 4.0) does slightly better than the Volvo, about 10 1/2 L/100k.

My son is driving vw golf tdi 5 1/2 to 6 L/100k.

I'm driving old Focus wagon about 8 L/100km, the way I drive it.

We're on the waiting list for a new hybrid but it's been months now. Next one after that will be electric.

I know how that goes. I'm on a waiting list for a C8 Corvette. I think it's been about a year now. The dealer has got a couple in but they weren't what I wanted and I'm not spending that much unless it's exactly what I want and the price isn't all marked up. GM has been less than cooperative. The dealer keeps calling me telling me to hang on. Yeah right. I've pretty much given up at this point.

I thought of getting a Tesla. But for the money they just don't do it for me. They're kind of boring. I drove a company car for about 10 years that was electric and I sure hope that battery technology has improved since then. I went through at least 3 or 4 of them. They were mostly Rav4 Toyota's and some weird thing from GM. They were okay but the chargers were unreliable and it took about 3 hours to charge one. So if the charger failed then you were down for 3 hours. There was that and the range was about 60 miles before you ran out of juice. But that was in about 1999 . Probably not a fair comparison to today's stuff.

So I have the Iron Duke. Good to know. I'm still waiting on the truck. It's still at my buddy's place.
