Turn Signal Wants to Cancel but Won't
I've just installed a new turn signal mechanism (OEM quality supposedly). Everything works great, but when making a right hand turn, the signal won't cancel. I can feel and hear a click as the wheel returns to straight, like its trying to turn off, but the cancel doesn't seem to have enough oomph. If I put a tiny bit of "helping" pressure on the turn signal as the wheel straightens out, the cancel works fine.
I am guessing the switch is a bit too stiff for the cancel to shut it off. I've been reluctant to pull the wheel again to investigate. Any thoughts on what could be the culprit? Or how to maybe loosen the switch up a bit, or strengthen the cancel? The left turn signal works perfect. |

Re: Turn Signal Wants to Cancel but Won't
I had that same problem on my '68 with a turn signal switch that I bought from gmcpauls.com and was made in the USA. I ended up replacing it with a NOS unit.
I had the problem again on my '89 when I replaced just the moving portion of the turn signal switch (Dorman?). I ended up drilling a new hole for the one poorly positioned return spring. Took me a couple of attempts to get it right. Last edited by pjmoreland; 02-21-2023 at 07:20 PM. |

PJ:
Thanks. So you wrapped the spring tighter to help get the turn signal off the detent? I haven't looked yet but is there a way to make the detent have less "hold". (I guess both solutions would work.) Regards, Cris |

Re: Turn Signal Wants to Cancel but Won't
The spring was sitting too far away from the canceling cam, so I drilled a new hole for the spring that shifted it closer to the canceling cam. My first attempt put the spring too close, so I had to drill a second hole that was not quite as close.
