Usually better air flow but I have heard that ram horn exhaust manifolds work just as well if they fit. I have also heard people say that if you are not making big horsepower than they don't really do much. They are also easier to wrought your spark plug wires around and I think that they are cooler to the touch. With all that being said I have headers and would get them again.

I was referring to the exhaust manifolds when I said this.

Re: Lowered and headers in the 63!

I've been on the fence for several months, as I'm building a SBC for my '66 that's got spindles & springs, eventually bags.
According to nearly every dyno test I can find, long tubes boost low end power. The effect is worth +40 hp up to 3500 rpm on a big block.
I found a compo of new Holley manifolds, shorties and long tubes. Shorties were not much better than manifolds, long tubes +15 hp over manifolds at 5500 rpm.
I'm installing the motor with manifolds, saving for long tubes. Not even gonna mess with shorties.
