new truck means new projects sierra classic 3500

Good afternoon, I have not been on the forum for afew years as my 1965 c30 was put on the back burner with life(remodeling a 1917 farm house, got married ect.) Just wrapped up the house and got moved in and the phone rings.

My father in law wanted to know if i wanted his truck that he knew i liked from the day i saw it. I agreed and my wife is all for it, so in comes the 1988 GMC Sierra Classic 3500. It is a bit of a transition truck as a tag on the door reads 9/87. At the top of the tag reads Quality Truck Bodies & Repair. The story that i got was that the truck was a cab and chassis and was outfitted to tow campers(flat bed, gooseneck hitch, air bags in the front end, possibly a higher rear gear ratio) The Motor is a 454 with the sm465 transmission, power windows, power locks, and factory AC. The conditions for getting this truck other than the fee of $1, is that i have to drive it 70miles home(no trailer) and i can not sell it.

Which brings me to my first question. He had taken the column apart to replace something a couple of years back and has not put the column back together. I have ordered a service manual off ebay, but it will not be here for a week or two. does anyone have a diagram of how everything goes back together? after i get that sorted out and a new battery ill try and get it started and see where they exhaust leak is(he can not remember if it is on the head side or the y pipe side of the exhaust manifold)

thank you in advance for the help and if anyone has another things i should check before the road trip im all ears.

Welcome back! I can’t help with the diagrams, but member Hatzie has pretty much every manual you will need.

Send more pics when you get them!

Thanks corts60, I have always wanted a square body 1ton since I was a kid. It will be an adventure, I just don’t want to be making an episode of roadkill on the drive home

Re: new truck means new projects sierra classic 3500

I would hop on CL or fb market and get a used local colum and slap it in. An auto colum will work. Quickest way to get it going and then repair the orginal when home

That a cowboy sleeper on the back?

Farmall is correct, it is a cj5 jeep top on the back. I do have a column out of an 80's chevy motorhome, but it does not have a key switch on the column(it was on the dash) but i do have a local pick and pull i could check out worse case.

Re: new truck means new projects sierra classic 3500

Well not much progress on the truck so far between the house and work. I was able to do some little things to keep making progress from an hour and a half away.

Got to the DMV and got the title switched over and tags, added it to my insurance for its drive home as well.

When i looked at the truck the last time i was down the front tires were pretty dry rotted and rather than take a chance i was able to sell one of my old junkers to the pick and pull for some cash. I had a spare set of rims from my 65 c30 project. so i got those cleaned up and new tires mounted. my service Manuel has also arrived so the next time i can swing down south i can tackle to steering column

Re: new truck means new projects sierra classic 3500

well i was able to mess with the truck a bit this weekend. It is fun trying to figure out where all the steering column parts go when you are not the one that took it apart. I found out the reason it was torn down is the cam that hits the starter switch broke off. That has been replaced before i took ownership.

As far as the column goes, the key switch does not move the cam enough to activate the starter switch, so i need to play with the gear placement some more. I was able to get it to turn over by using vice grips on the starter rod. which leads me to my no fuel issue. I have power to both pumps, but they are dead as a hammer(intank pump/sender). Does anyone have a preferred brand to go with? (TBI truck) my tank straps are also rusted in half so i scored some at the pick and pull for $11 just need to give them a good cleaning and paint.

here is a photo of the drivers side sending unit. i forgot to take a picture of the passenger side unit. Are they the same from left to right or are they side specific?

Re: new truck means new projects sierra classic 3500

They are side specific. I had a bog that I could not figure out… turns out I had the wrong sender and the fuel pickup was facing forward instead of towards the rear.

Re: new truck means new projects sierra classic 3500

back to my steering column woes. i have now gotten to key switch to engage starter switch properly. Now i just have to figure out why the shaft is rotated to the 9 o'clock position instead of 12 o'clock. i did score a newer wheel at the pick and pull to try out for fun $22 is not to bad for a little added comfort. i might go back stock later so i will be keeping the original wheel to have options.

Re: new truck means new projects sierra classic 3500

had a little more time this weekend to work on the truck. All of the parts that i had ordered came in so i was able to make a little bit of progress. I got the column back together(helps when you have the right tools) my junk yard steering wheel on, passenger side tank swapped out(still watching the pick and pull inventory for another set of tank brackets) new fuel pump/sender installed. I thought i was going to be able to run the truck, but it had other ideas. I hit the key and it was rolling over but was not getting fuel, pump was running and when i looked under the truck it was misting fuel out of the transfer valve a new one should be arriving today. my only concern is that it might be the rubber/hard lines with a pin hole. What does everyone do to repair the lines going into the valve?

Re: new truck means new projects sierra classic 3500

well it has been awhile since i have updated this thread. I replaced the tank switch valve which was leaking gas and now the truck runs and drives

I have been watching the local pick and pull for another set of tank straps for the drivers side. I was able to score a 2nd pair of straps off of an 85 r3500 for $8 as well as a full set of 19.5 rims and tires off of a 1994 3500hd i have been searching for a set for years and i am stoked to finally have a set for this truck. it will probably ride like crap with the 19.5's vs the 16's but at least it will look cool right? hopefully santa will bring more truck parts and really for the drive home it needs the dash buttoned up, 2nd gas tank installed, and probably and oil change for good measure

Re: new truck means new projects sierra classic 3500

Well it has been too long since I posted an update on the project. Lifes been pretty busy, but I am back to working on it for the drive home. I had to replace the new fuel pump(dead after a year) as well as the new transfer valve has failed. I am working on bypassing it at the moment.

My goal is to get it the 70miles back home and then relocate the tank to behind the rear axle using a 31 gal tbi blazer or burb tank. while not working on the truck i have been keeping an eye on the local pick and pulls and scored some goodies over the last month. a AAM rear axle with disk brakes out of a 2005 GMC 3500 box van, nv4500 trans with bell(minus shifter) from a 1999 chevy 3500, uncut radio section to fix my cut pannel, k5 buckets, center caps to go with the 19.5's. I really cant wait to get this thing home so I can really tear into it.

Re: new truck means new projects sierra classic 3500

well it has again been a long while from my last post. My father in law got tired of cutting grass around it. so saterday i took my dads truck and trailer down and got it back to my place. Other than a thunderstorm and some flash flooding on the roads it was a nice drive. Now I hope to make some real headway. I did drive it on the trailer so that was nice

Re: new truck means new projects sierra classic 3500

well not much progress this weekend between the rain, heat, and other obligations. I did get my new marker lights lens on $15 for 5 could not beat that price, at some point will still need new gaskets but this should keep the water out. I also threw on the 19.5 wheels and 8r19.5 tires. These added 2" lift in the front and 3" in the rear. All of my tune up stuff(plugs, wires, filter, cap, rotor) should be showing up anyday.

Re: new truck means new projects sierra classic 3500

made a little more headway on the 4th. did a tune up to get a base line on routine service. plugs, wires, high temp boots on the plug wires, cap, rotor, air filter. I also cleaned out the mouse nest and mud dobbers on the TBI.

When chaining it down for the trip home. I noticed that the U-bolts were pretty shot. So i also pulled one to try and measure/ match up 4 new ones. of course in doing so it snapped and broke the rear brakeline....so new brake lines it is.

Does anyone have an idea on what fittings, line size, I would need? All the prebent kits are for 1/2 or 3/4 ton so it looks like I will be rolling my own. I also think I am going to go with stainless for the hopes of trouble free service for years to come.

Re: new truck means new projects sierra classic 3500

well made a bit more progress.....kinda. Im always going to farm auctions and ran across a 76 Chevy Silverado 30 350/4speed/factory AC with a CM flatbed at an auction 2 hours away.....So now I get to do a flatbed swap to pick up a gooseneck hitch and better rear receiver hitch. The 76 will be sold after I swap beds. I did find it interesting that it does not have cab marker lights on the roof.

Re: new truck means new projects sierra classic 3500

well since the last update I have been busy pulling beds and getting the 76 posted up for sale. The CM truckbed will stay off until i get the rear frame painted, new brake lines run, and relocate the fuel tank behind the rear axle(ditching the saddle tanks). my existing flatbed i installed onto the 76 to make it a complete truck. its been slow going with work and 95 degree heat but it is getting there.
