Non A/C Heater Core - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hey Gang. I recently inherited my Dads 1968 GMC 2500 Series truck and while going through it to make it road worthy I found the heater core was leaking. After some searching on the web, it shows that the inner fender is required to come out to remove the heater/blower box. My truck is a non A/C truck and after looking around a bit at the truck I have my doubts if that is true. Has anyone else changed a heater core in a non A/C truck without removing body panels, or even worse, cutting open the heater box to get to the heater core?

Welcome!
You can take out the inner fender or loosen the hood hinge and move it forward a bit. Maybe you can sneak the case out by pulling the blower motor first, but I've never done it that way.
It's really pretty easy to take these trucks apart.

Hi Mark, My truck is a 1967 non a/c truck. When I changed my heater core, I did have to remove the inner fender, but it was worse thinking about it than actually doing it.
It was several years back but as I recall, I loosened the passenger hood hinge where it fastened to the inner fender and slid a 2x4 on top of the fender from the driver side fender to the top of the passenger side fender & supported the hood hinge. The inner fender bolts ran mainly just inside the wheel well and the other attachment points were pretty visible as I recall. Some of the inner fender bolts were a different length, so pay attention to that. It will save you a couple of minutes when you re-assemble it. Once the inner fender is loose, you can slide it down a couple of inches which gives you access to the heater core cover bolts. It’s pretty simple after that. Hope this helps.

Hello Clay, thank you for your reply. The hood is already off of the truck as I am putting the final touches on installing a fresh motor in the truck, so removing the hood hinge is not a problem. I just don't want to get into something to further along the project than necessary at this point. I am waiting on a bit of exhaust hardware so after that I can drive this thing.

I bought a core from Amazon and it is Aluminum. Maybe I'll send it back and get one that I may not have any installation issues with.

Dropping the fender and moving the hood hinge definitely helps - and makes getting everything reassembled (in my case) easier when dealing with the gasket/seal..

That huge dent is probably there from the last time when you were a kid. That probably helped with removal.

Somebody pounded that fender down to remove the heater core once before.

If you reinstall with a new heater core, you can leave out that one bolt that is hard to get to for easier removal for the next owner.

Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.
