K30 Axle Transplant or Frame Swap

Hey guys,
I am looking at swapping my 67 c30 over to 4x4. I am curious does anyone have experience with this? Is it better to transplant a dana 60 under my c30 frame or is it better to Get a 73-87 K30 frame and do a body swap?

Thanks in advance!

Re: K30 Axle Transplant or Frame Swap

Square body frame swap (in my opinion) would be more work than putting a front end under the existing frame. But I've been doing conversions for over 30 years. Is your 67 frame dented in at the steering box?

Re: K30 Axle Transplant or Frame Swap

kwmech,
Thank you for the reply! I believe my frame is not dented for the box, but I would need to look again. If it is dented, I will have to patch this with flat steel correct?

If it is dimpled for the steering box you won’t have to do anything but bolt up the later style powering steering box. I would swap the 60 under your existing frame. The square body frame can be made to work but it’s not plug and play by any means.

This thread might give you an idea about what it’ll take to get the front axle under it. There are others like it on here too.

Re: K30 Axle Transplant or Frame Swap

Are the k30 spring mounts different then say the k10

I have a chance to get a 70 c30 gmc and thinking of things to do with it

Re: K30 Axle Transplant or Frame Swap

67-72 4x4 and square body K30 use the same spring perch width front and rear. 1/2 and 3/4 square body rear perches are not the same as 67-72. Square body front axle perches are the same width as 67-72 4x4. Clear as mud??

Re: K30 Axle Transplant or Frame Swap

I converted my C30 frame to 4x4. Its pretty simple if you can locate the 4x4 brackets.

Yep. Pretty darn easy. Almost plug and play. Definitely the way to go

I have a line on a c30 running truck been decideing on what could do to it
A 70 gmc 1 ton dually 4x4 would be a good project for it a spare sm465 with 205 tcase a spare 69 k10 chassis 8 bolt dana 44 and dana 60 rear i guesing the rear in the c30 is a dana 60

Where did you find the brackets?

Also do you have to drill the mount holes? If so does anyone have a template or measurements to follow?

Most guys use the front spring hanger/core support brackets from a 4x4 truck. You will have to drill the holes.
A paid subscription and a want to buy add on the parts board will likely get you what you need.
Off road design and others have fabbed front hangers that can likely be made to work but won’t be as easy as the oe offering.

I have collected parts over the years or 4x4s destined for scrap. I robbed 4x4 brackets from my parts stash and drilled and bolted them to accept the next size up grade 8 bolts. This truck was originally a 72 C30 chassis.

Re: K30 Axle Transplant or Frame Swap

You can use spring brackets from any GM 4wd frame, from Blazer up.

No problem! Thank you for your input, How do you find where the back front axle mount should be located?

Re: K30 Axle Transplant or Frame Swap

I measured from the radiator support bracket to where it landed on one of my 4x4 frames. I may have also measured from the front cab mount as well. The 67-72 Chevy 4x4 brackets are made to sit on the inside of the frame rails, so really, you just need to locate the bushing hole.

That’s simple enough. Thank you!
