Talking SBC 350 & TH350 Rebuild Almost Done!

Well, back in April I bought a '72 C10 Cheyenne and while it looked great it leaked transmission / oil like crazy. Shortly after getting it my brother put it on a trailer and carried her off to East Texas. What turned into "fix the leaks" turned into a complete rebuild of both the transmission and engine (oh and the QJet Carb).

Even though she is not back together and running I cannot hold back posting the "almost" completed rebuild.

All I been doing for months is sending cash and dropshipping parts! Thanks to the guys that helped me in my '72 350 Upper Engine Wire Looms thread. I really like how those looms played out on the engine! Hunting down all the bits & bots I think was well worth it

Oh, it's not like my brother is going this for free. When he drives it back to be in Austin he is bringing me a old jukebox to repair LOL

He does Mechanical work and I do Electronics. Though I am pretty sure I got the better deal ;-)

Re: SBC 350 & TH350 Rebuild Almost Done!

Looks nice but I think your valve covers don’t look right.
You need an opening on the passenger side rear for hook up of breather line to air cleaner.

Re: SBC 350 & TH350 Rebuild Almost Done!

Better to fix it now.
I suppose you telling him he should have painted it ford red will really drive him nuts!
Ford red looks like the orange on your motor now after many heat cycles.
The orange takes on a yellowish patina after awhile. Kinda dull sheen like your original pics.

Re: SBC 350 & TH350 Rebuild Almost Done!

The engine was painted by my brother's shop partner and he has painted a number of Chevy engines with color code 72 (mostly for corvette restorations). He is the body/paint guy (among other skills for restorations). If the color shifts through time and usage, like my original, I'd consider that normal for stock

My brother replied to my text on the valve cover ... he only replied with a face LOL

Re: SBC 350 & TH350 Rebuild Almost Done!

The ford red paint was used by guys that used their rides for car shows. They wanted the motor to retain that shiny orange hue. Mostly to impress the judges.

Don’t forget to put some short bolts in the two holes down in front of the fuel pump.
They can leak oil.

Good deal!
Did you mention to him the two possibly leaky bolt holes by the fuel pump.
Hate to see a mess.

Question Re: SBC 350 & TH350 Rebuild Almost Done!

I looked at the photos and I am sure you are talking about this - which it has the top bolt in / painted.

The bottom one doesn't have a bolt but is that needed too? Seem I read its only the top one that needs it??

Re: SBC 350 & TH350 Rebuild Almost Done!

I had a block that was open on both bolts.
Bottom one shouldn’t but mine might have been a casting flaw.

Re: SBC 350 & TH350 Rebuild Almost Done!

When he says short, that means short. Just a few threads, about 1/2". It doesn't have to be super tight, just put sealer on it. Too long a bolt in the top hole will hit the fuel pump push rod.

Re: SBC 350 & TH350 Rebuild Almost Done!

She's running on her own power!

A/C is next to be worked on in the shop! Seems when it was converted none of the o-rings where changed out or at least that is one thing they saw wrong.

Then Shoulder Belts, Tach Upgrade, LED all around when it's back to me!

Re: SBC 350 & TH350 Rebuild Almost Done!

Well, after a week in a A/C shop I have A/C now! Everything from the evaporator coil to the condenser has been replaced. Using a orifice tube to a modern compressor and parallel condenser is in place. I am bummed it will look modern but at least they painted the compressor black for me. Personally I hope the price for this gives me worry free A/C operation. At the very least any A/C shop should be able to work on it in the future (or I hope).

Next up before my brother brings it to me: rebuilt numbers matching QJet Carb (previous owner put a '78 carb on), Fuel sending unit, and Morris 3-point seat belts!

Then my parts at my house are pilling up too: LED lights all around outside/inside (including headlights and dash), Tach addon from GMC Paul's, and shorty title column from the board member shortfleet!

Re: SBC 350 & TH350 Rebuild Almost Done!

one thing they added for me at the A/C shop is a manual hot water cut off value. It seems the little vacuum value was dead too and they did have one to install from their stock. But it was recommended to add a manual shut off and use it in the summer to insure NO hot water gets to the heater coil....

Oh they also found a critters nest in the vent hose on the driver side blocking 90% airflow. Otherwise the inside A/C stuff was in perfect operational shape! While it cost me 2k for this A/C fix - it seems they left no stone unturned!
