I miss this truck..

I saw a guy pull into Lowes today in a 64 with black plates. It really makes me miss my truck and how I want one for a daily driver.. Then I think abouit the gas mileage and how the heaters don't work so great. Maybe alot of insulation and a new heater would do the trick. I guess I need to sell my Ranger first then. oh boy...

Did you get rid of yours? Yeah the gas and cab noise are the killers. All stuff that can be fixed with enough time and money. I have neither at the moment!

Never have so few words said so much. I know that I get overwhelmed at times and just have to think about baby steps. I have the luxury of having mine to drive each day, but I find myself wanting it all done NOW!

Waking up 30 minutes early bundled up with a long sleeve shirt two sweaters and a jacket ,warming up the truck, wiping down the windows with the ol'ladys good bath towel that dont really make a difference because you still end up sticking you head out the drivers window with ears freezing just to see because the windows instantly fog back up as soon as you start driving, and as your about a couple blocks away from work and bout to get out of the truck you actually start to feel the heater blowing warm air and starting to be able to see out the windsheild...and also the rumble grumble of the exhaust poping as you step on the throttle and and the chirpping of the tires and you always hearing those mysterious suspension noises asking your self"what was that" waiting for the whole truck to come apart but never does as your always planning your driving route to go past a gas station cause you always seem to need to fill up....and even when your not in the truck you always seem to smell a little hint of burning oil and a bit of gas fumes because they have embedded them selfs into your cloths........

Wouldnt trade it for a new car smell any day, thats some of the joys and fun of driving classic car's/trucks for me always keeps it interesting.........

Re: I miss this truck..

same deal here.. when my '65 was torn down all i wanted to do was get it up and running as soon as i could. i missed it so much i bought a '66 c10 just so i could drive it daily.. little by little ive been getting my '65 up to driving conditions.. like mentioned before, an hour here an hour there will go a long way. plus it keeps the motivation going...

Re: I miss this truck..

Happy to hear that you still have it. The pics of it are great. It's really hard to work on 'em and drive them at the same time. I try to only let mine be down for a week or two at a time which means small projects for me. Base hits man... base hits.

Ole' man I use to work with would chime in and say "Boy. It's Hell to be to Cool." Everytime I would complain about riding my scooter in the cold or driving my 64 in the heat. Have to say he is right. Anyone can drive a newer type car and be in comfort. Takes a special kinda person to drive/ride an older toy that you work on more then drive or that lacks the creature comforts most of us have come to expect in our DD's.

Re: I miss this truck..

Mine is finally driveable, after nearly 10 yrs in the shop. I've actually been surprised at how well the heater works now, and it is much much quieter. I used peel & seal & foil lined jute padding under the OE mat & all across the firewall & back wall, under a repro firewall mat, all new weatherstrip, new heater core etc etc. I've driven it many times in 20* mornings lately, its done fine. I leave the 96GMC home.

Re: I miss this truck..

I am going to have all of next week to work on it. I am going to do something to it. I might even just paint the damn firewall in my garage even though I shouldn't.

Re: I miss this truck..

Yeah I get it. We painted my brother's '64 Goat in my driveway in Redwood City about 15 yrs ago. We started on a Sunday morning at 5:00 and had it pushed back into the garage by 7;00a.m. to hide it. Nevertheless the neighborhood reeked and I think a couple people complained to the cops cuz they were more present than usual. Didn't know it was aginst the law back then but fron the early start time I guess we had a suspicion!

I have a 64 just like that one, mostly.

Mine doesnt even have a heater in it. Came without one from the factory as it isn't supposed to be cold in Arizona.

As most of you know. This is what it looks like now. I welded the hole where the heater goes becuase I was going to go with an aftermarket one anyway. And I live in San Francisco and we have the coldest summers here..
