Converting to diss brakes on half ton 70

So today I was driving around and came in on a shop and was talking to the owner but was in a hurry. This guy told me to just go to AutoZone and Kragen and by all the components for my front brakes and convert it over to disk. I want to Switch over to disc in the front but don’t have the $600 or $700 to do it right now with the kit. I wanna stay six lug and this guy was telling me that I can use the drum spindles that are on my 70 and just buy everything from the auto parts store from a 71-72 and they’re compatible. Does anybody have a quick and easy way to do it and not have to spend that 600-700? I don’t see how that guy is right first off I would need disc that are six lug I don’t know... I’m kind of Rambling here but would love to know some shortcuts if anybody has some out there. I do want to lower the front end 2 inches. I’m in between 2 inch drop springs or just going ahead and buying that $600 kit that has 2 1/2 inch drop spindles and everything I need for the disc brake conversion but would love to do it for cheaper!

Re: Converting to diss brakes on half ton 70

Here is the sticky list to look at
You will need spindles 250 obo
6 bolt rotors 125 obo
Calipers
Brakes
Spindle bearings
Seals
Hoses
Etc

6 bolt rotors are aftermarket parts so they cost more

High chance need new ball joints and tie rods

To save money you need to scrounge used parts

Look into buying a complete front end cradle and all off of a 73-84 6 lug chevy.

Re: Converting to diss brakes on half ton 70

If you want to maintain stock ride height you can do it cheaper because you can pick up some 73 and up spindles. That was my original plan so I have the spindles and drag link from a 73 model in my shop with my "extra" parts now.

I decided to go with a 2-1/2" static drop on the front and have about $900 in my front end without the calibers, pads and hoses. BUT, I replaced everything while I was under there. Cross shafts/bushings, all tie rod ends, all ball joints, springs, drop spindles, six lug rotors, bearings, etc. Other than A arms and drag link everything is new.

Re: Converting to diss brakes on half ton 70

There are no factory c10 6 bolt rotors for the 67 to 87 c10 trucks are all 5 bolt only k10 kept 6 bolt rotors and there not interchangeable with 2 wheel drive trucks

I have only seen Ece Pol Cpp make 6 bolt c10 rotors

Replace it all , Do it once buy CPP parts thru Summit for price matching CPP's lower prices on ebay and Summit's free shipping . Buy all Moog parts from Rock auto .

inner splash shields off Ebay $39.00 - lug nuts $22.00

CPP 's red powder coated calipers with pads about $100.00 from Summit

Re: Converting to diss brakes on half ton 70

You can't use drum spindles. There are no caliper mounts cast onto them. I have a nice clean pair of stock 71/72 disc spindles if you want to keep stock ride height. Pm me if interested. I'm cleaning out parts I'll never use. You will have to switch to 71/72 ball joints. They have bigger shafts but fit the '70 control arms. Also you will need to use 71/72 outer tie rod end, also bigger and opposite thread direction from the drum brake ends, and move your '70 outer tie rod end to the inner location. Couple them together with a CPP tie rod adapter sleeve. Then mount your aftermarket 6 lug rotors and stock 71/72 calipers. Most of the parts houses now sell front brake hard line kits for this swap. Also you will need a disc brake master cylinder and proportioning valve. I used a CPP valve on my '69.

Shop these parts at your local auto stores except for the custom ones like the hard lines, tie rod sleeve and 6 lug rotors and you can get this disc swap done for a lot less that a kit.

That's a great recipe! I followed it on my 67. Worked nice.

Did you get the coated rotors from CPP also?

No , I used black caliper paint on the rotors , The CPP spindles and all the Moog parts also come raw and need to be painted or they'll just flash rust . The CPP calipers came powder coated red .

Re: Converting to diss brakes on half ton 70

I am following Grumpy's recipe on my 67 as well. Thus far it's going off without a hitch. Next up is getting the calipers and lines.

It will turn out more expensive than the kits I was looking at by a little bit but knowing I used MOOG ball joints and tie rod ends is OK with me. Plus I did all the cross shafts/bushings, upgraded the lower A arm cross shaft U bolts, and replaced the springs as well.

In short, the front suspension, steering, and brakes should be as good and somewhat better than new.

Re: Converting to diss brakes on half ton 70

Thank for the info. I went with a complete CPP kit but didn't know powder coated calipers were available. I thought I did my research, but it took many months to get access to this forum so that didn't help. I actually painted the calipers from CPP but they must have some type of coating on them as the paint peeled. And I thoroughly cleaned them prior and still no go. The truck has been off the road for 10years so I am just looking to get it on the road again. I will slowly restore later or just keep it a driver.

Thanks for all the help so far.

Re: Converting to diss brakes on half ton 70

Not a poor decision by any means. I think I am going to pull the trigger on the CPP calipers only in black. It's been nice seeing this go back together as I have the same goal as you. Get it on the road and continue the process from there. Not a nut and bolt restoration at this point.

Re: Converting to diss brakes on half ton 70

I am so jealous of your guys frames. I want to tear it all apart and make it nice like that. You guys have some gorgeous installs there. I will get there in time. I have focused on racing previously now it is time to go the other way. Mostly.
