Factory Frigidaire Compressor Decal Board Project

A few of us on the Board are working together to reproduce the Frigidaire A/C compressor decal for our projects. I have done this once before as a one off for our '69 K10. The '70-71 and the 1972 decals are a different part/model number (from the '69) and the '72 version differs in size.

The decal should have a code number stamped on it that conveys the build date and shift the compressor was made. Which means each decal must be individualized.

After speaking with the folks that do these decals with me...it is more cost effective for us to do several at a time. In fact, I'm not interested in quarterbacking a series of one off's for folks over time.

I am posting this thread more or less as an announcement, so that anyone interested can be made aware and they can get their code no (build date) ready.

I do not yet know what the cost will be. It will depend on how much graphic art time it takes to get to an approved draft. I will use this thread to update the project and when we are ready, I will post in the for sale section and take orders for about one week.

Special thanks to Pete for procuring and original "short" 717.

Re: Factory Frigidaire Compressor Decal Board Project

As reference...here's the original decal and our reproduction for the '69 K10.

The Code No 100381 breaks down to MMDDYS, or rather

10 October
03 3rd
8 1968
1 First Shift

Great. Have your Code No. ready.

Dropped everything off and spoke with the artist this morning. She said we may have first proofs by weeks end. She is working on another decal beyond these two for us, so I'm not getting my hopes up that it'll go that fast. I'll keep you posted...if for no other reason than to keep this thread on the front page so people who may be interested have a chance to see it.

It's a group effort Tony. Thanks for the pic. I knew you'd be in.

Your compressor just had her 50th birthday. Tell her Happy Belated for me.

Regarding the model number for the Frigidaire compressor. I have the build sheet with the date of 01-09-70 but I'm not sure where on the build sheet it says the shift number? Can anyone help me with that?

You'll have to get the number directly off your original compressor decal. It is the build date for the compressor itself. It will precede the build date of your truck (usually by at least 2 weeks or so). See 71CHEVYSHORTBED402's pic in post #8. His compressor was built on Sept 16 1970 in the first shift, but the build date of his truck would be later in September or possibly early in October.

If you don't have your original decal...then about all you can do is pick an arbitrary date and shift in December. I wouldn't expect dates to follow quite as close around the holidays...so maybe mid December.

I will have to pick a date then, as I don't have the original label unfortunately. Thanks for the background on labels.

Re: Factory Frigidaire Compressor Decal Board Project

The Code No. is not a standard font. We are going to have to create the numbers we don't have. Obviously we are good for numbers 1, 0, 3, and 8 because they were pretty clear on my '69. I've also got a good "7" on the example we are using as a template for the 70-71 decal. But that obviously leaves us short 2, 4, 5, 6 and 9. (EDIT: we'd like a better 9 and 2 than we have in the example posted above)

So...if you are interested in one of these decals and your code number is legible, please post a pic of it in this thread as soon as you can.

Also, if you just want to help out this project and have a great original decal with those digits that you can photograph and post...I'd really appreciate it.

Re: Factory Frigidaire Compressor Decal Board Project

I got proofs back yesterday. They look very good. Some very minor changes necessary. Looks like we'll be able to start taking any orders next week. Again, if you can, post any compressor decal pics with legible code numbers...it'd be very helpful.

If you are interested, and you have your original decal, I'd request that you take a picture of your decal with emphasis on your code number and have it ready to send.

If you are interested, but you don't have a decal, you can obviously arbitrarily pick a date and shift for your code number. My advice is to take your build date (or assumed build date) and subtract 2-3 weeks. Look at an actual calendar from the year and pick a week day and avoid holidays. If you don't have any idea about your truck build date, you can use sub assembly dates (back of instrument cluster, parking brake, rear axle housing are a few dates to consider) and just use that. Often different subassemblies have similar lead times.

Re: Factory Frigidaire Compressor Decal Board Project

Does it say that it's a remanufactured unit? I don't think that is original to the era. EDIT: Could be wrong of course. Any info on the truck that it came from?

I'll be stuffing envelopes and mailing them (USPS) tomorrow. I'd be surprised if it made it to you by Christmas...but maybe.
