Re: Anyone recognize this?

I found one of those weird round keys like you see open a vending machine and such. Usually I just toss them in a cup on my work bench but for some reason I tossed it out.

Fast forward several months. I bought some more ammo for my Glock and grabbed the handgun safe its in and tried to open with my key fob ... nothing. No biggie Ill use the combo ... forgot it. Last chance a key ... crap, now I know what the weird round key was for.

Still havent taken the the hand gun safe in to the lock smiths.

You mix in a dash instead of a pinch of hot sauce in that ketchup you put on your fries and tell me the difference!

Back in the late 90s Harley Davidson used those for ignition keys.

Re: Anyone recognize this?

How did a vehicle dash get it's name and why? I've always wondered. Even horse pulled buggies have a dash. I've heard someone say about someone else in a grumpy mood---"What got their tail over the dash"?

The word “dashboard” was originally used to describe the wooden board carriage makers attached to the front of carriages to prevent mud and rocks from being splashed (or “dashed”) onto drivers and their passengers by the horses that pulled them about. In essence, dashboards served as mud flaps for horses' hooves.

That's it. These more casual days you would probably hear "give a shake of..."

Mrs Dash, a good example. She provides a dash of seasoning. It means a decent amount but not too much, a healthy shake. what do I know? I eyeball everything

Re: Anyone recognize this?

Those things (pinch, dash, etc.) are just vague generalities that have no precision, because it's not needed. It's a "to taste" thing, unlike baking, which is very exacting chemistry. Too much or too little of something will change the outcome, possibly drastically.

Dashboard brings up one of my petpeeve words and that is cupboard. I work in a cabinet shop and once in a while someone will say the dreaded word, which drives me nuts.
Cupboard is a holdover of a very old term that just won't go away. A cup-board was literally that a board to put your cup on, an open shelf. Somewhere along the line, someone decided to enclose those shelves with sides and doors, probably for sanitary reasons? This is a cabinet. So we have enclosed cabinets and open shelves, why are we holding onto cupboard? Ever heard of a cupboard shop? No, it's a cabinetshop, even though we do occasionally make some shelves too....lol

Yeah, that word pops up occasionally, and always makes me chuckle a little. It's just what people are used to saying. To me, it's all casework. Is a cabinet a small cabin, haha? A cabin for cups? What about under-counter lights? Do you guys say that, or do you say under cabinet lights? Most often people say under counter lights, but mean lights under the cabinets above the counter. And for that matter, is it counter, or countertop? If it's countertop, then what is the counter that it is on top of? Or was it a top that held a counter - like a cash box or cash register? Funny how we get used to the terms, but they're made of words that don't seem to be related.
