Any pics of rear gas tanks?

I'm considering the rear mount 17 gallon kit from LMC, maybe even the
the 21 gallon, but I'm not crazy about something that would be highly visible from behind. Curious if anyone wants to post up some rear view pics of their trucks with those kind of tanks.

Re: Any pics of rear gas tanks?

I have that 20 gal in one of my trucks and I am going to replace it with something else. It really dosn't fit well and yes it dose hang down real low. Check out the first and the last page of this thread and you will see the universal tanks from Tanks Inc. I ordered one from this guy. http://www.leadmineproducts.com/servlet/StoreFront I will be posting pictures of my install also (as soon as I do it)..

Re: Any pics of rear gas tanks?

Here is my 61 with the new rear tank installed. Got this from Performance On-Line and was specific for the wider frame rails on this truck.

21 gallons, stainless steel and fits perfectly. The 63-66 have a lot more options. I liked this one because it fit perfectly and didn't hang too far below the rear bumper.

Re: Any pics of rear gas tanks?

Pic is from a low angle, so it looks like it hangs down more than it does, but when using only a rear roll pan, there is more exposed. Gotta love a rear mounted fuel tank, and no rear bumper.

You can see a bit more of how it sits in this video, where I give the worn and oversprayed tank some new love.

Cool, thanks for posting. So far I'm leaning toward the Tanks Inc. universal, but I'm still weighing my options.

Re: Any pics of rear gas tanks?

Funny you should ask. Im currently elbow deep in making mine. I didnt like any of the options that are out there and I cant bring myself to paying $400 + for a custom one. So I decided to build one myself copying CPPs dimensions on Ebay. 20 Gallons.
I wanted to do aluminium but my tig skills limited me to steel and a mig. Haven't finished it yet but here is some pics of what Ive got so far and one with it mocked up under the bed. Sorry no rear pics yet. Should be able to get some this weekend but its only 8 1/2" at the rear of the tank and most of that is going between the frame. 4 1/2" ish should be hanging out at the bumper.

Re: Any pics of rear gas tanks?

I tried fitting my tanks inc tank today, and it seems I have to trim the lower frame rails by about a 1/4" on each side. No biggie just more time.

Re: Any pics of rear gas tanks?

I can't hardly tell but surely you left room in your steel tank baffle for gas to get inside when it's below a half tank? Looks like you may have left out access holes, don't want to suck the baffled area dry with a half tank? of fuel around it. Lol I'm sure you don't do that tho...

Thanks. There are two corners cut out towards the front on each side. I am debating whether or not I need to fully weld up the sump. Its not like this is a high performance corning truck so it maybe overkill to have the sump at all. It does add some strength.

Here you can see how far it is below the rear bumper:

Re: Any pics of rear gas tanks?

Nice work out there, I know most bed fill caps are usually level with the floor or recessed even, but looking at the Tank's Inc photos, I'm wondering if its going to stick up causing an obstruction to loads. What do you think Chevy Fleetside does it look that way in person too? And Kieth, I'm thinking about doing just what you did to the bed cross sill. Thanks for that. And as far as building a tank from scratch....you got skills!

Re: Any pics of rear gas tanks?

I ordered a 70º filler so I could put a side fill in. At this point it probably won't be untill next weekend when I get a chance to work on it again.

We later installed a heavy angle iron support under the bed cross sill (outside of frame) to support the cut crossmember. no problems 14,000 miles down the road. Kieth

Very cool. That looks very familiar. I built mine very similarly. I fabricated a couple of additional baffles that went up about 3/4 of the height and spanned front to back with 1/2 x 3 inch cut outs on the bottom for the fuel to pass slowly through side to side. Since I planned for my truck to be pretty low, but also pull a trailer, I made my tank an inch shorter than the aluminum tanks available from the big vendors.

Re: Any pics of rear gas tanks?

1966 SWB Fleet frame.....

Boyd Welding Tank bought at Pro Performance (vendor here)

Its for a 1967-72 but fits just fine (had to do a slight relief in the angle crossmember....)

VERY VERY NICE QUALITY...affordable too. (Dunno if you have EFI or not)

Just bought one of these. Looks like a much better fit than the blazer/burb tank (with some frame trimming).

Re: Any pics of rear gas tanks?

Just wanted to thank you all for posting. I decided to go with the Tank's inc. Universal. It holds 16 gallons and thats about all I need. It's also priced right and I do believe I can install it without a lot of difficulty. What a great resource this site is because it really helps to hear from others who have already been there and done that. I'll post a pic or two when I get done.

Re: Any pics of rear gas tanks?

Here's a quick follow up on what I decided to do. Thanks for all the posts to my request for pics. I went with the Tank's inc, universal. It fit well and I only had to grind a tad off the lower frame rails. The spare tire brace got flipped sideways and move forward where it is welded in as my front strap mount. The rear brace is still in the stock location and seems fine for a rear strap mount. I painted the visible part of the tank satin black so it will "bend in" under the truck. Now I have to hook it all up and make it all secure against the bed cross sill.

Re: Any pics of rear gas tanks?

I used one of the universal tanks, had to cut and re-weld the rear to slide it in.
