Replacement driveshafts for 71/72 Dana 44 ?

I have the Dana 44 front axle out of my 72 and one side inner and one side outer is worn and suspect to leakage around the seal. This is a restoration truck so I don't want to reuse them if they most likely are going to leak. No listings I can find anywhere for 71/72 open knuckle, disc brake axles for this unit. Seems they are all 73 and up. I realize the u joint is a larger size but question is
1) Will 73+ axles fit straight bolt in
2) Will 73+ axles fit with some modification

or do I have to go looking for a better set of used.

Any real world experience out there, please chime in.

Thanks for any help, Jeff.

Sounds like you are looking for axles not driveshafts.

Yes. If a mod sees this and can change the title to "Axles" instead of driveshafts that would be great. Definitely an Axle question. Thanks.

Re: Replacement driveshafts for 71/72 Dana 44 ?

Well my 72 with a Dana 44 has disks so they gotta be out there. i'd check with the local 4X4 shops or Diferential repair specialists in your area. It may be helpful to uncover the B.O.M code on the front driver side of the axle, it will also have a build date on it and can help them fond the correct axles.

The hubs are also different from a 73 but are avalable thru aftermarket.

EDIT: You may get more hits on this if the moderators would move it to the 4X4 section.
