Got screwed on ebay

I bought a claimed NOS GM GT54 gas cap in the claimed
Original box...well it's an original box but a assembled in Mexico
cap...box is a legit 1972 piece and cap is what I believe a generic
no name part..some one took the legit cap and switched it out.
I don't thinkna 1972 GM part was assembled in Mexico with made in USA
box
Opinions from the experts needed.

Did you use Pay Pal? If so you should have buyer protection. Hopefully you can get your money back.

Re: Got screwed on ebay

Seller has 100% positive feedback. I messaged him about this and told him I needed to send it back.. If he does not respond I'll have to leave negative feedback but wanna give him a chance maybe he didn't know the difference

Re: Got screwed on ebay

From what ive read, GM was the leading manufacturer in Mexico through the 90s.

In the late 60's/early 70s they built several additional plants to add to what they already had in Mexico prior to that.

Maybe someone who has done the research can say for sure but the sole fact it was assembled in Mexico in 1972 doesn't discount it from being legit. There are all sorts of legalities for 'assembled in' and 'made in'. The box saying different is weird but again there is no telling. Someone who has dealt with a lot of NOS may know, and not just a few things. GM could have easily produced them for a fraction of the cost in Mexico, shipped them to Michigan and printed that on the boxes because they added something to the cap in Michigan.

Probably will never know for sure but you could at least get the seller for failing to disclose that.

Re: Got screwed on ebay

That's definitely a rip-off. It could be that the seller was unaware. You're wise to contact the seller and give him the benefit of the doubt.

That too! I was thinking that, but my memory is starting to be more questionable, the older I get, so I didn't say that.

Is there a part number on the cap? Does it match the part number on the box? I agree with the observation about the warning sticker.

Re: Got screwed on ebay

The box and printing on the box was done in USA The part may have been made in Mexico but doubt it. I will find out . my whole family worked for GM and ac parts plant. now called Delphi when I worked there, only worked 17yrs not a chance for retirement. also worked at flint truck assembly along with the V-8 engine plant. I think STANT was our producer of gas caps

Re: Got screwed on ebay

Here’s a NOS GM boxed example to compare. Note the stamped VENTED along the inside outer margin near 12:00. The cap you were sold is not a NOS piece.

Re: Got screwed on ebay

I don't recall the gas cap on my '69 CST ever having anything other that a smooth dome polished stainless gas cap with no indentation of any kind. I did try a leaky locking cap in the early 70s, but that doesn't count.

Re: Got screwed on ebay

I am going to guess , an we all know what happens when we ASSUME. but most ebay sellers are not vehicle historic researchers and buy parts in big lots.
Most are not out to screw anyone, just take what they have at face value.
having looked at the gas cap on my truck. other than maybe the rubber gasket and a buffing of the cap top. there isn't much to it.
I don't get it, an original "correct" gas cap, that you buy isn't "original" to the truck, so .
Look, I don't know nor care to know what the o/p paid for the gas cap. That is for him/her to know. but to "me" dropping a part on a vehicle doesn't make it original, or correct. but like all opinions, your mileage may vary.

Re: Got screwed on ebay

It's about being OEM, made by the company that made the truck made for that model truck. It fits, it works, and it looks like it belongs because it does. The point here is being misled no matter what the merit of wanting original is. But for no other reason, we have a lot of people who bought aftermarket gas caps start threads looking for ways to [prevent gas from leaking out the cap. The solution is always* get another cap, preferable OEM.

*Unless there is a venting issue

It's true what you say about Ebay sellers often just plain don't know what they have and are just telling what they were told.

G.m. DOESN'T make a ton of things for vehicles they sell, not now, not then. It was sub contracted out to someone else.
Where or whom made it for the sub contractor is always guess.
Maybe it is me. I don't get it.
A gas cap that came on the truck, that you had to replace the gasket and have re-chromed isn't the part that came on the truck. Nor is a replacement part from over the counter, that never sold and was stuffed in a corner of a warehouse for x number of years.
oem's change sub contractors on a whim, no one on the production line, at the factory was punching out and building gas caps. another company made them for g.m. shipped them to factory, and got stuffed on tank as truck moved down the line. I think way too many over think this.
But having said that I have some 1970 factory tire air for sale

Re: Got screwed on ebay

I only bought this cap because I've had trouble with aftermarket caps leaking.
With all this being said I did send the cap back for a refund.

Is the tank neck original?
Could the new caps leaking be from the almost 50 years of the cap being taken off and on, and wearing down the metal of the neck that the metal tabs of the cap slide on.

Hi Jim. The example here is correct for a ‘72 20-30 series w body side molding #3927086 but the number printed on the box has faded over time.

The originality of the cap is what makes it desirable. If you just use your truck as everyday transportation then it doesn't matter but if your building a show truck OEM pieces are the only way to go. They may not be the item put on the truck at the factory but it's an exact match to what was.

My Hawk is a prime example . The drivers side rear view mirror started to go bad , sure I could have put a autozone or other brand mirror on it. But it wasnt the same as an OEM piece . I hate to tell you what a NOS mirror cost for that car.

Most of the leaks are caused by poor quality of the replacement caps. Thus, people want the quality of Nos/oem caps. It's not hard to understand.....really!
