Re: 1969 C20, CST. 396, 21,000 mile documented Survivor

I believe it was a legal requirement that they had to have at least a driver rear view mirror, but I cannot recall when they started "safety" inspections, but it was in the 60's I think. I am showing my age, but I can remember when it became law that pickups had to have two taillights as my dad had a 59, and originally it only had one on the driver side (no turn signals, the driver used arm signals out the window. When it became law and inspections came along in MO dad mounted a piece of angle iron and mounted a second passenger brake light.

Re: 1969 C20, CST. 396, 21,000 mile documented Survivor

Minimum of two mirrors started in about '64, IIRC. Prior to that, only an inside rear view mirror was required. I think it was about '60 when heaters were mandatory. I worked at a shop in '76 and was driving the shop car ('58 Fjord wagon) to pick up the owner after we delivered a customer's car. It had no heater or defroster. It was raining cats and dogs, so I had the driver's door window open to air the car out, and someone drove by and splashed water into the car. There I was with a dirty shop rag, "drying" the windshield on the inside.

Ok so here's what I don't understand. This truck is a Z84, CST. It states right here CST trucks came with a cargo light. This one like I said is just the outside bezel, no lamp fixture and no hole in the cab.

The other mystery is being a CST truck there should be a headliner, there is not.

Interesting discussion. Maybe someone can tell us when headliners started on CST trucks. I had a heavily optioned 67 CST years ago, and no headliner then, but it had the "68" headlight and hood eye brow mouldings (most say those did not come along until 68), and I was fairly certain those had not been added, so it may have been a very late 67 just before start of the 68 changeover. Wish I had looked at build date or had a build sheet on it.

I've seen where options have showed up mid-year, in production. Maybe that's what happened with this truck?

My post #130 of the thread you are reading should help answer most of your questions.

Dave...

At this point, I'd bet the deluxe side marker lights are not original on this truck either. Do yours light when the headlights are on? The original markers on my early December '69 were not lighted and not the deluxe style. The deluxe versions like yours were only made with lights. Here is a picture of the front and back of the original markers from my CST/20. I also replaced mine with the deluxe version and got the appropriate wiring from a 1970 junkyard truck.

Jim as I stated in an earlier thread the top lens is lit, the bottom portion is just a reflector. On all four.

Re: 1969 C20, CST. 396, 21,000 mile documented Survivor

I used to own an early 69 cst 1/2 ton that did not have a cargo light or headliner. The early headliners were perforated. I am not sure on the dates these happened.
I also have a set of cst side marker lights with no light provisions in them.

If the truck doesn't have a paper build sheet tucked under the seat springs, then you can get a pretty good estimate of the build date by comparing its VIN to the VINs listed in this thread:

The previous owner replaced the fuel tank no sheet was found. Nothing under either bucket seat nothing under front carpet pulled back as far as I could reaching in with my hand. Glove box liner removed nothing behind the dash.

Looks like Flint (F) doesn't have a good representation of 69 Chevys on the Build Date Project. Bummer. You might be able to get a rough idea from the window date codes.

I'll snap a good photo of the glass codes here in a second and post it. Thanks for the idea!

Stamping on the windshield is directly below edge of passenger wiper arm corner of glass.

So this truck was built within the first 3 months of production 68?
