well..actually the firewall was thinned with paint thinner...the interior was with mineral spirits. i like how the interior turned out compared to the firewall...
another member suggested mineral spirits as the thinner because the finish comes out much better, so i gave it a shot. also..i havent noticed any "craters" with using the mineral spirits. ill post some pics of my column tonight...i used the same exact process as the interior. to be honest, i dont know why i never used reducer. i just started out using regular paint thinner that i use to clean my gun...wonder how much better it would be with reducer.
on a side note..anyone want to trade gear shifter lens? i ordered one from lmc and i guess i ordered the wrong one. top is the new one, bottom one is mine..

got the column back in today...i was a little confused at where things went because i forgot how i took it apart lol.
for those at are following...i have question. this bracket that goes on the column by the firewall, i noticed it has 2 holes in it, and the column itself has 2 "nipples" on it. i tried to line the bracket up with the nipples and tighten it up, but it make the column turned out of whack, like it wouldnt be straight. so i loosened it up, turned the column to be straight in the middle, and tightened up the collar. is this right? its the collar on the left, you can see the small nipple right next to the bracket support, the other nipple is under the raised portion of that bracket.  pic of the column from the inside..

actually made some progress in the last month....i got the steering wheel painted along with the glove box door, put in a new '72 booster and master cylinder...and......
finally, finally got the motor and trans dropped in tonight ! got the motor mounts tightened up fully, just need to finish tightening the trans bolts tomorrow and slip the driveshaft back in. i did manage to strip my intake bolt hole while adjusting the motor, im hoping i can just thread a grade 8 bolt in there and let it catch..the other 3 are good. will get some pics up tomorrow, snapped some tonight but they arent very good.

Makin some good progress there Kevin! Those gauges came out really clean looking. Tip: that new master cylinder and booster will look old and rusty real quick so make sure you clear coat the h3ll out of it so it stays nice and shiney for a looong time!!!

Another option is to use Duplicolor caliper paint, the kit that applies with the brush is easiest to apply with the cylinder/booster already mounted. Stands up real well to fluid, heat, etc.

Yeah rattle works fine, it isn't as thick as the caliper paint but holds up pretty good, and is cheap and easy to reapply when needed. Not much brake fluid is gonna get on it anyway just make sure you cover it with a plastic bag and a towel when filling! It will keep that cool raw look for a long time. My alternator still looks great!

good idea, i already noticed some flash rust on the mc lid...
well, im hoping i did this dash right. the only thing i didnt do was change the bulbs but i can do that with the gauge still in. got the headlight switch, wiper switch, and choke cable back in along with the dash...    i havent hooked up the trans linkage to the shifter yet, but is that the reason why the turn signal base spins some when i turn them on? like the shifter housing moves...im thinking once i get the shifter linkage connected to the rod to the trans it wont do this? or did i not tighten something up right in the steering column? on a side note..scored a nice set of 2001 suburban front and middle row seats off craigslist...for $75!

well i would have thrown the originals back in but my friend ran over them with his 4x4, thinking they were in the scrap pile.... about the column, the metal case that the shifter housing is bolted to, with the turn signal inside...when i put the blinker down, the case moves down a little, when i put it back up the case moves along with it. in turn, its also "moving the gear selection" on the indicator (from N to R, or from N to D1, etc..), even though its not actually shifting gears...if that makes any sense.... im not sure if there is something inside the column that keeps it stationary..or if its the part on the column under the hood that bolts to the transmission shifter linkage..that keeps it stationary this thing...

That's an odd ball problem.....kinda like "my buddy ran over my seats thinking they were in the scrap heap" problem.
I am not sure if the turn signal cam would have anything to do with this, but I doubt it. The shift indicator should move freely, but down at the base where the turn signal is I don't think it should. Maybe test it by taping the column so it won't move like it is hooked to linkage. Is everything tight on the column outside the firewall?
