64-66 chevy trim???

I've been planning paint ideas for my 64 Tornado, and was wondering what's involved in adding the full side trim and custom cab trim to a 64 short fleet? How many holes are drilled, what kind of clips are used, is it a difficult process, etc? It sure looks good with a 2 tone, and I may go this route if it's pretty basic. Thanks!

Re: 64-66 chevy trim???

I added the side trim from the '63-'66 Custom cab trucks to my '63 just a few months ago.
I did not want to drill and use clips so I used double sided 3M adhesive tape to hold the trim on. For the white insert between the chrome strips I used a white vinyl sign tape I got from a signmaker friend of mine.
If I did not like the look, I could reverse the procedure and not be committed with paint and holes on the side of the truck.
So far I like it a lot and it looks just like a factory install.
Greg.

Greg.
Mudpile, you can get the clips for this as a kit from Brothers, The Truck Shop and the like.

Greg, Nice idea! Did you use 3M tape for automotive applications? If not how does the tape hold up in hot weather? Got pics?

I thought bout adding the trim to mine but dont want to drill into the body nor fab additional pieces for my 64 crew cab. So I'm leaning more towards having the stainless trim & stripe airbrushed over the clear. Just need to find the right artist to make it look like the real deal.

Re: 64-66 chevy trim???

I was planning on doing the same thing one day with the 3M tape. Keep us posted on how it holds up...

Re: 64-66 chevy trim???

Thanks for the help guys. I'm still not sure whether or not I'll go with trim or not, but now I have an idea how I can go about it.

Re: 64-66 chevy trim???

I was lookin into the the mounting of the trim last night. I searched in the Yellow & White book: "1960-1966 Chevy/GMC Truck Factory Assembly Instruction Manual". It provied all the info for the exact mounting: hole sizes, exact hole location & offsets. Its pretty detailed. I've scanned these pages and attached the 3 pdf's. Good luck!

Re: 64-66 chevy trim???

......another little trick you can do to get it stright is a "lazer level" the kind you can aim at a wall and it shows a red line so you can line up pictures and stuff just set it on a stool and aim it at the side of your truck and you have a stright line to work with adjust as needed....,or snap a chalk line, that works too.
