Heater hose connection at pump?

The hose connector at the water pump for the hose to the heater comes in different hole sizes for flow rate.(I think)
I have 3 different ones and don't know which one to use.(Stock 350 72c10)
How do I figure out which one to use?
What does the different flow rate do to the heater?
Is it more flow = more heat and does that mean the engine temp takes longer to get to temp.
Is it less flow = faster engine temp so faster heat?
Or is it something else.
Thanks K.E.N.

Re: Heater hose connection at pump?

The pump connection is an inlet to the pump.
Usual hose sizes to the heater core are 5/8 hose from intake and 3/4 inch hose back to the pump.
Use the fitting on the pump that uses a 3/4 inch hose.
Heater doesn’t determine engine warm up time. That’s controlled by the thermostat.

They are under pressure so the difference between the 2 sizes is marginal. I think they did the 2 sizes so the flow through the core would be directional

Thanks, so the pump pulls the coolant through the heater core ?
I should learn the coolant flow.

Re: Heater hose connection at pump?

The fittings all are the same hose size but have different holes in them.

No!
The pump pumps the coolant into the block on both sides, up into the heads at each spot between the combustion chambers including the back, then the coolant flows thru the heads to the front and to the thermo housing.
Heater core is fed by hose from fitting on intake near thermo housing. Coolant flows back to pump. Sometimes it goes to the rad instead.

At one time the hoses were both the same size. I don’t remember what year the change to a larger return hose was.
You likely won’t see much difference with equal sizes.
I heard once the larger size was introduced due to strange gurgling noises in the heater. People didn’t like that so the cure was the bigger return hose.
