Quantity of paint required

I'm planning on doing 2 component, single stage urethane and I was wondering how much paint is required and what the minimum amount of coats that are recommended.

I plan on doing a 2 tone scheme for a 1960 GMC, but we don't necessarily need to get into that kind of detail.

What I plan on painting:

- firewall
- entire exterior
- interior of bed (sides,back,front)

Thanks for the advise.

Re: Quantity of paint required

Since this is your first paint and if your using a HVLP gun plan on 2 gallons. If you have painted a bunch you could get by with less but I'm assuming this is a first time type thing.

This is certainly my first attempt at a large coating with an HVLP gun.

Thanks for the information as I will be painting the truck in stages, or partly, piece by piece, knowing to order a little more at one time so the colors match is super helpful.

Re: Quantity of paint required

A few things to consider, if your painting a metallic color you really need to paint all at once or the flake orientation could be different. Also if your apart, paint the parts as they would be on the truck. IE: hood down flat and fenders on the side, don't lay doors down on a table to paint them they need to stand up as well.
Spray a test panel to make sure you have the gun set where it needs to be with air pressure and flow so the paint will lay out better.

Re: Quantity of paint required

I am in the process of doing the same type of thing.

Is there any guide to how much paint each individual part would take (on average)?

For example, I have both fenders already stripped and rust repaired. I'm going to epoxy paint them shortly. Does it take a pint, quart, 2.5 quarts, etc?

I was trying to tackle mine like this:

Fenders
Hood
Bed
Cab
Doors

Luckily, I'm not doing metallic, but that's a great tip on subject orientation while shooting the paint.
