Decisions Decisions

So I'm building a blue/white/blue K10 SB to match my 1971 K20, garage space is tight and playing with idea of selling my Original paint K10 SB, this truck is original paint and clean on outside, underside and the interior is amazing, no rust and runs down road 70-75 with one finger on wheel. Cold a/c and everything works as it should. Long list of mechanical maintenance recently done, truck is a hard one to replace! After all only original once right?

To buy a factory K10 SB that's decent will run 12-15k and usually rusty in typical areas, add in body work, interior, mechanical attributes and paint job what dollar amount are you at? What's an original worth in its original paint and body, engine and drive train with original build sheet attached?

By selling I free up space and capitol for new project HOWEVER it's so nice and i'm a huge fan of survivors. I keep trying to justify keeping it. I have a super cool wife that says do whatever you want just don't regret it your decision down the road. The truck has its blemishs of its 49 years of existence but a still a super nice survivor. I was told it sat in collection since early 90's Previous owner added tach and tilt wheel, I have original column and steering wheel to go with it. So because I can't really value this truck I'm considering "Bring A Trailer Auctions". They will ask for a reserve price and that's what I'm having a hard time determining. I have used them one other time and was very impressed with the results. Any thoughts on this rather hard decision?

Re: Decisions Decisions

Super nice truck...for reference I have turned down 40k for my original paint survivor 1972 Cheyenne Super SWB 4X4. I would think 40 is fair

Re: Decisions Decisions

That's a HIGH dollar truck for sure!!!

Sell: If you have no emotional/sentimental attachment to it and you can't deal with the space/logistics of an additional build.

Keep: if you can deal with the logistics of a new build AND there's an emotional/sentimental connection with the old truck.

Re: Decisions Decisions

No way in hell I would sell an original like that if it were mine. Thats just me though. True Original survivor short K10’s in that shape are stupid hard to find anymore.

Re: Decisions Decisions

Do you drive your trucks much? If you don't really drive them and you enjoy the build process maybe selling it is the way to go. I'm going to give BaT a try soon with my 2wd blazer. Hopefully the results are successful.

I would create more space for that truck. Sounds like you need another garage/shop lol.

Re: Decisions Decisions

I would agree that you should think about what you want and what you're interested in doing moving forward. That truck is indeed rare and needs to be kept in its original condition if possible. I looked for years for my project truck based on what I planned to do with it. I knew I wanted an original short bed 4X4 (rare) but had plans to clean it up and LS swap it. So I finally found one that had already had an engine refresh, cam update as well as a lift and previous paint job. I could do what I planned without impacting an original paint survivor.

That said, if you are passionate about doing something other than just owning an original classic (you want to focus on a new build) find someone that is committed to keeping it in original condition, sell it, and move on to what you are passionate about.

Life is too short to do otherwise!

Re: Decisions Decisions

I don't understand your dilemma. From what I can see you have way more space than I have. I wouldn't be selling, I'd be buying more!
But my old lady keeps saying I have a problem.

Re: Decisions Decisions

That is one nice truck.. you will never find one like it if you want it...But if it sits and isnt used maybe move on..I would not budge under 50 ..not like you can run to the store and get a different one

There is the key to your answer right there (smart wife!). You can ALWAYS sell it, but once you do, it's game over for that truck. How many people have you met, YEARS LATER that have said, "man, I wish I never sold that _______." If you don't HAVE to sell it now, then don't...you can always do it later.

OTOH, probably never a better time to be selling than now. People are paying stupid money for less than what you have there, which is a true gem.

So it really comes down to whether or not you would regret parting with it. Tough spot, but no one can answer that but you. I would not. Good luck!

Re: Decisions Decisions

Short of financial ruin, I don't think I could sell that truck. Way too nice and something you just don't see that often.

Re: Decisions Decisions

For stuff like this I like to apply the 10 year rule. In 10 years are you going to say: "I'm glad I sold the survivor truck so I could build another truck" OR 10 years from now will you say "I never ever should have sold that truck!"

Tough decision dude with such a beautiful truck.

Re: Decisions Decisions

My brother and I have gone through many nice cars/trucks over our lifetime that would be worth a pretty penny now. A few of them I kept 8 yrs'ish, but even though what I had was rare or hard to find I sold them and I don't regret it. Why? Because I was simply ready to move onto something else and enjoy that new purchase, the hunt, the excitement of the build, etc. For me, if I'm not wrenching on it or driving it a lot, it's time to move on. I think you know what you have is nice and hard to obtain, but keeping it only for that reason to me is not enough. If you're questioning whether to sell or not you've really already made up your mind. I vote to sell and move on.

Oh, back to the regret piece. Even if I could have back in my garage 1 or 2 of my top fun cars/trucks with the snap of my finger, I'd probably get bored with them sooner or later and sell them years later anyway - been there done that syndrome.

Lots for you to think over. I wish you happiness whichever way you decide. Keep us informed.
