Gas tank skid plate
I am having the right fuel tank replaced on my 3/4 ton 84 Scottsdale and I was wandering if it was really necessary to have the shield reinstalled after the replacement? I know they are notorious for collecting mud and debris.

Well my thought is always that the factory doesn't put anything on a truck that is not needed , even if only cost them .02 cents

I put rustproofing on the tank and installed shield

I only have one truck out of 6 or 7 with the skid plate and that gas tank rusted out from the outside. I deleted it since I don't really rock crawl anyway.

My truck is a 93 but I recently hit a piece of concrete in the road and if the plastic "skid plate" wasn't there it would have ruptured my tank.

I'm in the process of removing both of them on my 84 as we speak. The driver's side was close to going through and the passenger side wasn't far behind.
Between what I saw outside and the condition inside (unrelated) I have all new tanks coming, and they're be reassembled without the plastic shields.

I have no intention of installing them on my truck.
If you're concerned about road debris puncturing the tank, I'm quite sure you'd be better off with several layers of roll-on bedliner on the outside of the tank. Plastic tanks would be nice, but they're really expensive.

I put the shields back on my 76.
It's up to you, but I liked the fact that I had a little more armor on the tanks. They didn't rot out in 40 years with them in place. If you're worried about it spray the tank with cavity and frame wax before assembling the shields to the tank. I needed the electric fuel pump tanks from the 1987-91 TBI trucks for my 1987 6.5L diesel that didn't have provision for a mechanical fuel pump otherwise she would still have the 1976 tanks in place.

I've never reinstalled them after I've taken them off. wire wheeled them down, patched the holes and moved on. Body filler works great for patching
