To the best of my knowledge there were no factory chrome ones. In my 20 years of buying, selling, and building these trucks I have never seen one.

I may be wrong, but didn’t Cheyenne supers and CST blazers with manual transmission get chrome shifters?

I'm not sure. I think some had chrome on the 4x4 lever though. Hopefully someone with more knowledge on that will chime in....

Re: sm 465

I had a '71 CST Blazer with a 350/np205 and sm465 combo as my first 4WD. It had the chrome 4 speed shifter and transfer lever in it and to the best of my knowledge it was totally stock, no signs of being tampered with. This was in early 81 or 82. With my normal 20/20 hindsight I should have never sold it.

Re: sm 465

I have a 68 CST, SM465 that's stock. The shifter is painted black. I've never heard of chrome ones being available for the 68's in any trim level.

My '71 GMC Jimmy K/1500 w/ Custom trim level, has a chrome shift lever on its SM465. Pretty sure it's Factory. St Louis-built truck. NP205 Xfer case shift stick is chrome, too.

Re: sm 465

My ‘72 Jimmy custom has factory chrome shift stalk. I have not seen a 2x4 SM465 with a chrome stick in a 67–72 but haven’t messed with but one. It was a ‘70 Sierra Grande but it had a black stalk.

Based on the difference in shape 2x4 vs 4x4 you could probably use a square body chrome SM465 shifter. Or have an original chromed.

Cut and paste:

When did the SM465 come out?
Image result for sm465 history
The SM465 was made by General Motors from 1968 to 1991. They are found primarily in GM and Chevrolet trucks, Blazers, Suburbans and many other models falling under the 1/4-ton to 1-1/2-ton platforms.

Also, I just read that GM produced the SM420 from 1947 to 1967, so 1967 was the last year that Chevy used them in trucks. The previous owner of my 69 K20 informed me that he changed the original SM420 in it to a SM465. Apparently not true. Interesting.

Re: sm 465

I have had over 300 of these trucks since I started playing with them when I graduated high school and I would only guess maybe (6) 4 spd. shifters and only (10) 4x4 shifters that were chrome. I am just looking to add one to a 68 2wd to add a little more cool to a build I am hoping to have ready for spring. Thanks for the info every little bit helps. thanks Jay

If you are serious about this, I would find a reputable plating shop who will do Triple Plate Chrome, Copper, Nickel, and finally Chrome.
I did this for an older Jeep project that I did about 25 years ago. The plating is still flawless.
The key factor is the polishing before it gets plated. I did my own just because, but they will provide that surface finish polishing for you. Think of a paint job, the surface you paint is what you see in the final results.
A piece like a Shift Rod shouldn't be that expensive.
Just for consideration.

1967 was the last Model Year for the SM420. M.Y. 1968 introduced the SM465. The first K/5s were Chevy Blazers in M.Y. 1969. GMC followed in M.Y 1970 with the Jimmy K/1500. Custom trim level Jimmys [w/ MT] got chrome shift sticks. [Maybe Blazers, too. IDK?]

I have heard some GMC and Canadian-built trucks were equipped with SM420s thru M.Y. 1969.
No Jimmys were built anywhere else but St Louis until M.Y. 1972, when the Flint Mich. plant joined in.

I doubt any K/5 - K/1500 [Blazer/Jimmy] utility trucks ever came with SM420s from Factory.

My 69 K-20, when new, was a Oregon Department of Transportation truck, color same as Highway Stripe Yellow, so I guess it's possible it was part of a fleet order from GM that was shipped into Oregon.
The owner I purchased it from said he had changed the Transmission and Transfercase because the original had the older Divorced, drop down type output, Spicer I believe. It even still has the Crossmember for that Divorced location T Case mounted in it's original location.
The truck, when I first got it, had some ungodly low gearing 5:56 or something Ring and Pinion with heavy deep mesh gear teeth. I changed to 4:10s
I would imagine those real low gears were meant for pulling some heavy loads. I was told they were popular with the Tractor Pull truck builders.
Axles I'm referring to are the Eaton rear and Dana 44 front

Re: sm 465

Waking this thread up regarding chrome SM465 shift levers;
In my '71/72 parts catalog there are multiple part numbers listed for the shift levers denoting which came with Custom Sport Truck (C.S.) packages.
Example:
71-72 K-1,2,Blazer (K) C.S. w/4-spd......3963035
71-72 C-1,2,3 w/Muncie (6 cyl.) (exc. C.S.), K-1,2 w/Muncie (exc. C.S.)......3899919

while there aren't pictures or other notes like 'chrome' or 'bright appearance' it seems that trucks equipped as CST's got chrome levers or P/N 3963035. Anyone got a bone stock, original Z84 equipped truck with chrome levers?

The same is noted for transfer case levers which I've seen some stamped with these numbers;
71-72 All, Blazer (exc. C.S.)....3991931
71 Blazer (w/C.S.)....3983533

The bright transfer case lever is specifically called out in the 71/72 Blazer Vehicle Info Kit,https://www.gm.com/content/dam/compa...let-Blazer.pdf, as part of the CST package on K10 models. I wonder if the chrome 4-speed lever got lumped in with the 'bright control knob and pedal trim' since it wasn't specific to 'K' models.

Chrome 4 speed shifters were absolutely part of the Cheyenne and super packages… my 72 K20 Cheyenne. 100% original shifters 100% factory chrome.

Re: sm 465

I recently snagged a chrome shift lever out of a a square body truck with an SM465 transmission from my local junkyard.
It looks like it's going to work in my '68 K20 that I'm restoring.
I know it has a different bend to it but I think it will clear my seat and T-case lever just fine.
Just wondering if anyone else has tried a lever from a square body in their 67-72 trucks?

Re: sm 465

My K10 has a square body 465/205 and associated shifters. The 465 shifter will barely hit the seat in reverse but it’s not a huge deal.
