Re: Gas Prices?

Back in the 60s and 70s I never would buy from a "cut rate" or no brand gas station and for good reasons. One of my friends lived next door to one and saw the operator actually running a garden hose into his underground gas tank after dark.
My preferred fuel brand back then was Union 76 or Exxon and never had an issue. I usually ran regular but occasionally bought 'high test' and did not feel any difference in how it ran. We used to have Ethyl and High Test grades. Now it's 87, 89, 94 grades, the highest grade ethanol free!
Today, with all these high gas prices, I buy mainly from the lowest in town now which happens to be Walmart (Murphy's Oil), and I can't say I've ever thought I got bad gas from them.
Remember when you could splash gas on yourself and smell it the rest of the day no matter how hard you tried to wash it off? Not so anymore. Today's gas is so weak now it is easily washed off, smell and all.

I can relate to your story about a old guy watering down his gas with something back when I was a kid.. by the way ,does Arkansas have a direct pipe line to Texas,,and maybe you pay no state tax? ,, Why is your gas so cheap and other states much higher? What ever it is Good on for ya

Re: Gas Prices?

^^^

Anyway, I remember the gas crisis in '73 and station owners actually cheating by adding water to gas. How desperately lame. I also would by gas by brand and never from the "spot gas" stations because you didn't know what you were getting. But an Exxon dealer can add water as easily as a non-name dealer. All the fuel comes from the same storage. I go with the lowest price and have never regretted it

Our regular is $3.25.9 but I blew past all those places forgetting I needed fuel. I ended up at a place @ $3.45.9. Nope! Not paying an extra $.20. I took my chances (getting lower than I ever go) and made it back for some $3.25.9 driving pleasure < Sounds ridiculous, doesn't it?

Re: Gas Prices?

My wife stopped and put gas in her car at one of those "Last Stop' gas stations before you have a long stretch in the desert.

She starts driving and the car starts coughing and the warning lights come on. Keep in mind that this is a brand new car and she is literally in the middle of nowhere in pitch dark with 40 miles to go and the car is barely running.

She calls me. But I was still in Southern California at the time. 200 miles away. What can I do? She doesn't even know where she is. Somewhere in the desert scared to death.

She managed to limp the car home. It took about 3 hours of nail biting.
So she put in some fresh gas. The warning lights went off and the car ran fine.

Those sold her bad gas!!! Who does that? Knowing she's a woman alone in the desert. How much extra did that scum make putting her life on the line?

Re: Gas Prices?

I keep the 50:1 in my chainsaw. When I'm out cutting up a load, running through a tank, or using the saw often I use pump gas. Saves a heap of aggravation.

I see prices vary $.50 a gallon in the same area, just around the corner. $3.79.9 vs $3.29.9. The $3.79.9 was Exxon

Re: Gas Prices?

I went to CostCo for gas in my econobox. They are 40¢ cheaper than the station closest to me. Plus, I get a 4% rebate, for another 20¢ per gallon. That makes it only $5 a gallon.

Re: Gas Prices?

I have to drive 20-30 miles to buy non-ethanol. For my 50:1 mix I buy the 2 cycle oil in the little 6-pack. Dump one in the 2.125 gal can and fill with gas (ethanol). No brainer and no problem as long as I'm running through tanks of fuel from use. But in the off-season for firewood when I just need to make a cut or trim a limb I use that stuff. I think the can I have now is only the second one I ever bought. I kept having problems from ethanol in my 2-cycle equipment I use only occasionally. I haven't had any problems since using that stuff. BTW, I have never bought pre-mixed coolant. That's just retarded

Re: Gas Prices?

Gas is down to $3.29 in a few places and as high as $3.49 as little as a couple of miles away.
Diesel is the one I really noticed today. It was down to $4.59. It was well over $5 over the weekend.

Obviously Im a little late to this post, when I worked for Lowes the last couple of years I was shocked at how much of this gas we sold. Id see people with 8 cans of it in their carts. Even as gas prices were soaring when I left a few months ago it didnt seem to slow down sales.

BTW I paid 5.67 the other day for a gallon. I got jammed up in horrible traffic and I was forced to get off the main hwy and find gas. On a regular traffic day it would have been no problem making my gas last to my destination which had three stations at that exit.

Re: Gas Prices?

Our low just recently was $2.79 but has in the lasts 2 weeks creeped back up to $2.99. I just read this morning how the price of oil is spiraling down too. How does that work? Oil goes down and it's a couple of months before the pump gas price reflects that move?

Re: Gas Prices?

We have refineries in our state pretty close to us. And somehow every time something happens no matter how small ... OH NO! Refinery problems (raccoon caught on the property) We need to raise prices! Maybe exaggerating about the raccoon, but it doesnt seem like it. Also seems like the major metropolitan areas have higher pricing than the more rural areas. And I dont mean major like Seattle, even a smallish city like where I live has higher prices. We'll go for a Sunday drive and I see gas prices out in the middle of nowhere much lower ... Invest in big oil I guess if you want to come out ahead.

3.67 for reg . Notice that as soon as the price went up on fuel everything went up. They blamed it on the fuel price and for petroleum in general . Now that’s it’s gone down has anything else ?

It'll be the trickle effect excuse again. Don't worry, after midterms the price is going to skyrocket past the highest prices we paid back in spring

That's how it has always gone all the years I've been driving. Gas goes up or down with what seems to be no price controls from above. When it goes up significantly so does everything else. Then the fuel price resides and everything else stays up. Been watching this cycle since '71, and elections never had anything to do with it.
