Jocky Box or Glove Compartment ,that is the question
As a kid I remember in Oregon hearing the door on the dash was called a Jocky Box and then later on it was also called a Glove Compartment .. ..well , I read that Pierce Arrow motor company first made a compartemnt under the seat to carry extra guages and such ,, around 1915.. so where does that leave me here in Idaho where I also read that people of this state started the name of Jocky box as a place for what ever in the dash of a car or truck...
What say you about this important matter.. lol

Re: Jocky Box or Glove Compartment ,that is the question
I've never heard jockey box. i never put gloves in the glovebox. I'd think on horse-drawn wagons and buggies a jockey box would be under the seat

Re: Jocky Box or Glove Compartment ,that is the question
That 1915 Pierce Arrow I mentioned had a glove compartment under the seat,, big wigs used driving gloves to look cool in the them ol days .. and after the sun got to them ol steering wheels on some cars ,,the black came off on your hands .. really ! , I seen this in the wrecking yard close to me in Oregon .. Ol Bob Munson had cars there clear back to model tees ..

Re: Jocky Box or Glove Compartment ,that is the question
I grew up in NW Oregon and only heard it called a glove box. I knew a N. Calif. guy who always called it a jockey box, but never heard anyone else call it that.

Re: Jocky Box or Glove Compartment ,that is the question
Always heard it called a glove box or glove compartment. Jockey box is a term I've heard for an aftermarket tool box in the truck bed or around here they are called dry boxes.

^ Right? Jockey box is an old school trucker term. That's what I expected to turn up.

Re: Jocky Box or Glove Compartment ,that is the question
A jockey box is a girl that likes really short guys.
And has anyone ever really put gloves in a glove box? I know that I never have. I need that space for my weed. They should call it a misdemeanor box. Jockey shorts insinuate something small. Why would you wear them? Seriously I've never heard the term "Jockey Box'. It was "Glove Compartment' when I grew up.

It would be interesting to see what everyone does put in their glovebox. I keep the owner manual, tire gauge, air chuck, registration cards, business cards, hair brush, Visine, pens, napkins... I think that's all. I hardly ever open it. I keep gloves in the console or on the transmission hump.

I keep nothing in my glovebox in my Porsche. It doesn't have one. I went to put the insurance card in it and it wasn't there. I had a 1986 Mustang GT and the owners manual didn't fit in the glovebox. Now that's some real engineering right there.

Sounds like the jockey thingy is a western US colloquialism. Never heard of it in NC, or up here in ME.

Upon reflection I actually think I have heard it referred to as "Glove Compartment" at some point in my life.

Re: Jocky Box or Glove Compartment ,that is the question
Ok, here it is. The glove compartments were first a box near the driver for keeping the gloves needed to keep hands clean and to keep them warm since the first cars were open. That's where glovebox comes from. It was glovebox first, then glove compartment once built into dash. In some other countries as well as areas of this country, such as southern Minnesota and NW Wyoming, they call it a cubby-hole or just cubby. No one brought that up yet. Then there is jockey box, mostly upper Rocky Mt states use that, such as Idaho. This is from Wikipedia.

Never heard he term Jockey box before or anyone ever use it. Been all over country and being military ran across folks from everywhere and just never heard it used. Interesting though.

From what I heard the glove box is where the gloves are stored, used to crank start the engine back in the day.

It must be true Tim as my parents moved from Weiser Idaho in 1947 to Western Oregon where I grew up.. and like others kids do with their dads ,,,I probably heard my dad call it a jockey box and standing as tall as I could ,,I hollared " I got a Jockey Box in my Car" ,that's how this post started..
