265/70/15 on stock wheels?

A buddy has a set of Coopers less than a year old he wants to let go, I can get them for 400 bucks. New they are over 800. Curious if these would be OK to put on the stock steel wheels on my 72 Burb? Currently the tires are on 8 inch truck rally's, but that isn't the look I want for my Burb. I'm not positive on the wheel width for the stockers, I have to pull the current ancient tires off of them. Just don't want to spend the money to do that if I cant use the wheels.

That’s what I run in my trucks . Never had a problem but I’m not sure if the Burban rims are 6 or 7 inch . I wouldn’t put them on a rim smaller than 7” width

Tire Rack agrees -- recommended rim width for 265/75-15 is 7" - 9".

Re: 265/75/15 on stock wheels?

Stock 1/2 ton wheels are normally 15x6. I remember back in the 70's I ran a 10-15 tire on the rear on stock rims, (265 would be similar in size) but the tire sidewalls were pulled in. Since I was mostly concerned with traction, and these were a rougher type tread I ran the air pressure down to about 10 PSI which helped both the traction and ride. Later I put 15x8 Chrome reverse rims on the rear which looked much better (to me anyhow). In those days it was not uncommon to run a tall/wide tire on the rear vs. today where everyone seems to wants no sidewall, and a 20 inch rim. I'd probably buy the tires, and look for some wider wheels, but that is just me.

Re: 265/75/15 on stock wheels?

I think 6 inch wide sounds correct, im not 100% on that though.

Once I start having to purchase wheels that fit these tires I may as well buy the tires Id rather have (Wanting a thin whitewall) which I know will fit on the rims I have.

Hard to pass up a deal on a nice tire though =) He has another fella in line though so its not like Ive left him hanging.

Re: 265/75/15 on stock wheels?

Used to shove tires too big for the rims all the time back in the day. My first car 1963 Hawk put a 62 nose on it as it was hit and I bought a 62 parts car .

Re: 265/75/15 on stock wheels?

I have a set of slotted mags and a set of AR 200s I could use but I think it would look a little silly (in my eyes) with those on it unless it was lowered. Not sure if Ill ever go the lowered route, in my head I'm liking a stock stance with a stock-ish overall look. But you never know because they look so nice down a bit.

GEEZE! Lol I just looked and the tires my buddy has are actually 265 70 15's ... Oops!

Re: 265/75/15 on stock wheels?

My son tried two different combinations on his 72 C10. First he put a set of Hankook 225-75-15 whitewalls (like you describe), on 7 inch wheels from a 90s 1/2 ton, with the nice P01 full wheel covers. Then I ran across a very nice set of the square body 8 inch rally wheels everyone runs on these trucks with 235-75-15, and believe it or not the rally wheels and tires rode much harsher, and he never really liked the look as well as the stock configuration, so we put the smaller tire/wheel back on. I know the 8" rally wheel is much heavier and couple that with the slightly larger tire, it must explain the harsher ride. Both were same tread, same pressure, but you can sure tell the difference in unsprung weight. I think the 7 inch wide wheel looks better due to filling out the wheel well a little better than the stock 6 inch stock wheel yet the P01 wheel cover fits just fine on the later wheel (they cannot accept the dog dish caps, no nubs).

Looks like Hankook might have changed the naming, but likely the same tire we now have on the C10, and price is not bad for a 70,000 mile tire. They will likely dry rot before they wear out, as the truck is only driven to cruise nights and the occassional pleasure drive.

Just something to consider if you want a stock look and narrow whitewall.

Re: 265/75/15 on stock wheels?

Those are a good looking tire. Most of the fellas on the board (Ive looked at a ton of pics) that are running this type of tire are running 235's vs the 225. When I compared them the difference is negligible except Circumference which is 1.86 inch difference. On a side note I spelled circumference wrong the first time and spell check suggested circumcised, glad I didn't hit OK =)

When I checked my spid the L78-15 equals 235 75 15 today. The Hankook version of that size tire is only 5 bucks ea more than the one you posted.

More stuff to consider ... thanks.

Re: 265/75/15 on stock wheels?

Wanted to say thanks for the conversation in this thread. It made me dig a little deeper with your guys help. Discovered for around a hundred bucks more I can get the actual tires I want.

I believe my thinking process on pricing tires comes from only buying larger 4x4 tires over the past many years not realizing when you go from those to two wheel drive tires the price difference can be substantial.

Re: 265/75/15 on stock wheels?

Since I purchased the 235-75-15 tires to go on the Rally wheels I got curious as to what the cost was a little over a year ago, as I know tires are like everything else in the last 2 years and have skyrocketed (hmm...wonder why?). The 4 tires online delivered to my door was $310. Of course this does not include mounting or balancing, but I have the equipment to do that myself which has paid for itself time and time again.

Re: 265/75/15 on stock wheels?

Not stock rims but I suspect these Crager's are 8 x 15's. I got the 235/75 x 15's for them BFG BSW

They were a taller tire, which I wanted, to help lower Fwy RPM's. Had to drop a tooth on the speedo gear. I tried 2 teeth less (20) but would not work with the drive gear in my Saginaw 3 speed

Re: 265/75/15 on stock wheels?

Years back I put mich LTX on the roadmaster wagon, big difference. I wanted them for the 72 pickup but could not get the large rear size so got TA again.

When I put the michelin on the car i was concerned about noise but they were not noisy and the car handled better. The truck and the car weigh the same. the load rating on the LTX is way higher than the TA as well.
