Never done this before, but seeing as how my engine will be out anyway, I was wondering if anybody has any helpful tips on replacing the oil pan. Is it as straightforward as it seems? My old one has a hole in it

Make sure you get good seals, they like to leak. Good sealant and gaskets and you shouldn't have a problem

Like dion says, use plenty of sealant on both sides of gasket. Two diff. sizes on pans up front depending on year of pan. They usually give both sizes in gasket kit. Make sure you use the right one.

I would use Fel-Pro's one peice oil pan gasket. I'm using one, and I LOVE It!!! Does not leak a drop!! hehe.

Just make sure to follow the directions for applying the sealant that come with the gasket. It is very important that you only use sealant where it says to, if you don't you will get a leak. And be acurate on the torqueing of the bolts too. Follow all the steps outlined in the directions, and you will never have a leak.

It's not uncommon for the flange on the pan to become distorted from being previously overtorqued. I always check for this. If it is streched in around the bolt holes you can flatten it out with a small hammer. Go easy with the gasket sealer or all of the excess will end up on your oil pump pickup screen. Even the best gaskets shrink a little, so check the pan bolts after a couple weeks to make sure they're still snug. Hope this helps.

I have also used the one piece felpro gasket. I love it, and if you ever have to take your pan off, you can reuse it! It's a very nice setup, comes with new bolts and everything.

I agree, one piece rubber gasket is the only way to go. Also, make sure you get the right year oil pan. Not all sbc oilpans have the same front and rear seal clearances. Good luck and keep on truckin'!
